Don Fowler: Left Wing Nutcase

Don Fowler is highly offended that a "right wing nutcase" recorded him joyously hoping for a catastrophic hurricane during the Republican National Convention.

"One doesn't anticipate that one's private conversation will be surreptitiously taped by some right-wing nutcase," said Fowler. "But that's the nature of what we're dealing with."

Here's what he was overheard as saying:
"The hurricane’s going to hit New Orleans about the time they start. The timing is -- at least it appears now that it’ll be there Monday. That just demonstrates that God’s on our side. [Laughter] Everything’s cool."

Listen for yourself here.

I dunno. I'm having a hard time mustering much sympathy for Fowler. It seems to me that only a left wing nutcase would be wishing for the destruction of New Orleans. A left wing nutcase like Don Fowler or Michael Moore.

Bad News For Democrats, Gustav Weaker Than Expected (Or Hoped)?

The satellite image at left shows that Gustav is interacting with an upper level trough to its west. The trough contains dry air (the darkest regions of the image) and this trough was feeding that dry air into the storm's southern and eastern quadrant and was inhibiting its development as it moved over the loop current. Note the asymmetry in Gustav's convection in the next image, which was taken at about the same time. Convection if stunted in all but the southwestern quadrant. There are some very prominent Democrats who will find this very disappointing. The Weather Channel, whose quest for ratings and advertising revenue encourages hyping hurricanes is still holding out hope for a category 4 at landfall.

Barack Obama: This Isn't The Campaign Staff I Knew

Now it's Barack Hussein Obama's own staff that fails to accurately represent his wonderfulness.

Just hours after his campaign issued a first statement Friday ripping the addition of Sarah Palin to the Republican ticket, Barack Obama backed away from that statement — or at least its tone — and said that his own campaign had misrepresented him.

Obama often speaks of how important his staffers are to his bid and would be to his administration, and he’s praised them for covering for each other’s mistakes. But in the heat of the campaign, he’s publicly called them out for everything from missing an event to misrepresenting his policy positions to using his office to aid a donor.

Democrats Rooting For Another Katrina

If you ever needed anymore proof that Democrats thrive on misery, listen to the former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee celebrating the possibility that New Orleans might be hit by hurricane Gustav during the Republican National Convention.

At least he's honest. I'm sure that most Democrats are hoping that another category 4 hurricane hits New Orleans so that they can exploit it politically.

Keith Olbermann seems to agree.

WSU's Troublemakers Aren't Much Trouble

Darn! They just don’t make campus troublemakers the way they used to. Or at least, they don’t make them around here the way they do in Berkeley. Now down there, even though they don’t raise holy heck the way they did back in the sixties and seventies, they still know how to entertain. Up here in the Great Northwest, the most that can be said of campus activists is that they are a bit boring.

Shortly after I spread my copy of the Thursday edition of the Moscow-Pullman Daily News across my knees for my evening read, I came across the disappointing news that a compromise had been reached in the tree standoff between Washington State University and local tree huggers who were trying to preserve a few trees from chainsaws. WSU had already removed a few trees and planned to remove a few more as part of its efforts to make the older, western side of campus more accessible for the handicapped.

Shortly after the project was started this summer and after a few trees were felled, bored local tree huggers leapt into action and expressed their indignation by creating a website. It was a website with photos of the threatened trees, poetry, odes to “the fallen,” and an online petition. It was a far cry from the protests I recall from my college days.

Apparently, this is what campus activism has come to. A website. How about a virtual protest? Maybe the campus cops can create their own website where they would spray the virtual protesters with electronic tear gas. We could have riots using World of Warcraft interactive computer games. Why not? WSU brags about being a “wired campus.”
And even though protests at the University of California, Berkeley put WSU’s to shame, even Berkeley’s campus activists have tempered their passions. They even have their own save the trees protest in progress that we can use for comparison. In late 2006, when it was learned that the University planned to remove a small grove of trees to make room for a new athletic center, tree huggers scurried up those trees and have resided there ever since. Like WSU’s trees, Berkeley’s were part of a landscaping project and therefore are not really part of a heritage, except perhaps, the long dead landscape architect’s. The species is not in any way endangered. There are millions of them in Alameda county and well over 100 million statewide.

I was sort of looking forward to watching WSU activists trying to spend the upcoming winter in a tree, although they probably would have just Photoshopped pictures of themselves in the tree and posted it on their website.

Wimpy protests are something of a WSU tradition. Perhaps 15 years ago, a group of activists announced that they would be spending the night on Terrell Mall to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless. They lasted only until about midnight, when they decided that it was getting too cold, so they went home, claiming that they had made their point and there was no reason for them to suffer any more discomfort.

I recently discovered another wimpy WSU protest. For the last six months or so, I have noticed that urinals are frequently left unflushed in the men’s rooms. At last I actually happened upon one of these non-flushers and challenged his hygiene.
Did he need instructions on how to operate the appliance? Was he marking his territory? Perhaps it the finest thing he that had produced all day, and he wanted to leave it for others to admire?

“No,” he sheepishly answered. He informed me that the plague of unflushed toilets on campus was part of a protest of Washington State University’s water use policies.

“If it’s yellow, let it mellow.”

Ah well, every great cause needs a good slogan.

After all, he explained, the flush water was only going to irrigate WSU’s new golf course, which many disapprove of. Not only is the golf course a playground for the wealthy, but it’s a waste of precious groundwater. In fact, another group of campus activists has been protesting that same issue, although I don’t thing this latter group has yet mustered the gumption to even make a website.

So Washington State University is not just fighting for its right to rearrange its landscaping, it is engaged with protesters with poor bathroom habits for the right to irrigate its landscaping.

Somehow I doubt that WSU’s brand of protests will ever make it into the history books.

More Obama Thuggery

Obama's brownshirts try to intimidate another media outlet.

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign organized its supporters Wednesday night to confront Tribune-owned WGN-AM in Chicago for having a critic of the Illinois Democrat on its air.

"WGN radio is giving right-wing hatchet man Stanley Kurtz a forum to air his baseless, fear-mongering terrorist smears," Obama's campaign wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "He's currently scheduled to spend a solid two-hour block from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. pushing lies, distortions, and manipulations about Barack and University of Illinois professor William Ayers."

Hmmm. They're really nervous about this Obama-Ayers connection aren't they? Ignore that man behind the curtain!

Of course, the Democrats had an ABC producer arrested for filming Democratic bigwigs schmoozing with big money lobbyist and the Obama campaign is threatening television stations for running campaign ads it doesn't like. Obama's goon squad is even trying to have critics jailed.

By the way, here's the ad that Barack Hussein Obama does not want you to see.

More Bad News For Democrats: We're Winning The War

American optimism regarding the war on terrorism has reached an all time high.

Voter confidence in the War on Terror is at the highest level ever recorded since Rasmussen Reports began regular tracking in January 2004. Fifty-four percent (54%) of American voters now think the United States and its allies are winning the war. The previous high-water mark for optimism--52%--was reached a handful of times in September and October 2004.

Big Networks Complain: Democrats Don't Hate McCain As Much As They Do

There has been a common lament coming from the networks covering the Democratic National Convention - too little hate.

CBS's Bob Schieffer rued to keynoter Mark Warner that “normally keynote speeches” deliver “a lot of red meat,” but “I didn't hear a lot of that.” Over on NBC, Brian Williams pushed Warner: “You know there's some in the party who feel that this gathering isn't tough enough against a John McCain who, after all, hasn't let up for a day against this party.” Back to CBS, Jeff Greenfield asserted Barack Obama needs Hillary Clinton “to wake up this hall after a speech that was not only not red meat by former Governor Warner, but more like tofu with sprouts.” Couric even asked Michael Dukakis “if he thought the Democrats were hitting John McCain hard enough?” Clinton's speech left Couric unfulfilled: “We expected a lot of red meat from Senator Clinton tonight...Are you surprised she didn't sort of attack him more vociferously?”

Previewing Ed Rendell early in the evening, CNN's Wolf Blitzer wondered: “Let's see if he has some red meat.” On MSNBC, Chris Matthews was “amazed why they don’t have more fun with the man who calls himself Dick Cheney,” as he lamented: “It seems like they’re pulling their punches.” Analyst Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post yearned:

I am waiting for someone to take the podium and say the word “torture.” I'm waiting for someone to take the podium, say the word “Iraq.” I'm waiting for someone to take, to take the podium and talk about domestic surveillance...

Call it Joementum!

It’s official: Barack Obama has received no bounce in voter support out of his selection of Sen. Joe Biden to be his vice presidential running mate.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Aug. 23-25, the first three-day period falling entirely after Obama’s Saturday morning vice presidential announcement, shows 46% of national registered voters backing John McCain and 44% supporting Obama, not appreciably different from the previous week’s standing for both candidates. This is the first time since Obama clinched the nomination in early June, though, that McCain has held any kind of advantage over Obama in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

Introductory Chemistry For Nancy Pelosi

Joe Biden's Spineless Foreign Policy

If it is true that Barack Hussein Obama chose Joe Biden for his foreign policy expertise, then we can infer from Biden's record what we can expect from an Obama administration - appeasement.

Biden's political games have made him Tehran's favorite senator. As Gen. David Petraeus struggled to unite Iraqis across the ethnic and sectarian divide, Iran's Press TV seized on Biden's plan for partitioning Iraq and featured his statements with the headline "US plans to disintegrate Iraq." Biden's attack-dog statements about U.S. policy failures emboldened Iranian hard-liners to defy diplomacy. In the Dec. 7, 2007, official sermon, Ayatollah Mohammad Kashani speaking on behalf of Iran's supreme leader, declared, "This Senator [Biden] correctly says Israel could not suppress Hizbullah in Lebanon, so how can the U.S. stand face-to-face with a nation of 70 million? This is the blessing of the Guardianship of the Jurists [the theocracy] . . . which plants such thoughts in the hearts of U.S. senators and forces them to make such confessions." The crowd met his statement with refrains of "Death to America."

Obama picked Biden for experience, but he might also have considered judgment. When it comes to Iran, Biden could stare down dictators; too bad he blinks.

Joe Biden Foreign Policy

Supposedly, Barack Hussein Obama selected Joe Biden to shore up the tickets foreign policy credentials.

How about these credentials? The New Republic reports on the rumination of the man whom Democrats hope will be a heartbeat away from the presidency on the afternoon of January 20, 2009.

At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: "I'm groping here." Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we're not bent on its destruction. "Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran," Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

Barack Obama's Destitute Brother

Andrew Breitbart asks: "Does anyone think if Mr. McCain had a sibling living in a trailer park making minimum wage (892 times more than Mr. Obama's half brother's yearly income) that the mainstream media and the Obama campaign wouldn't notice?"

The Sunday morning shows parroted Mr. Obama's shocking discovery that the McCain family is well-off. Smarting Obamaniacs campaigning for their messiah are now scripted to ask voters in battleground states how many houses they own and participate in an official campaign contest, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: McCain Edition." Winners receive hope, change and fist bumps - spoils of the "new kind of politics."

Someone who made $4.2 million last year and lives in a mansion that a mobster helped pay for should not be throwing stones. When Mr. Obama's flesh-and-blood lives in squalor, raising the standard of living of his opponent's extended family is probably not a smart idea.

When even the mainstream media points the finger at itself for bias, well.......

"My colleagues in the national media are absolutely biased, in the tank supporting the Obama candidacy while claiming the mantle of objectivity,"

Russia's Looming Oil Bust?

Experts have pointed to a grave deficiency in Russia's oil boom - no new exploration. Sound familiar?

Most of the oil produced after the country's 1998 financial collapse has come from drilling and re-drilling old Soviet oil fields with more advanced equipment — squeezing more black gold out of the same ground — and efforts to develop new fields have been slow or non-existent.

That strategy is potentially disastrous, said Valery Kryukov, who researches oil companies in western Siberia for a government-funded think tank.

"If the situation which exists now stays the same, oil production will start to decline seriously in two years," Kryukov said in a phone interview from his offices in the city of Novosibirsk.

The implications extend far beyond Russia's borders. Last year, Russia was the world's second-largest oil producer. If its output begins to decline or is hampered by inept or corrupt business practices, the price of oil could begin climbing again.

It seems that leftists are the same everywhere.

And Obama Said, Let There Be Renewable Energy

Obama has declared that he will transform our economy. Big words for a man who "has never run so much as a Dairy Queen."

By 2012 he would "require" the economy's huge energy sector to -- here things become comic -- supply half as much energy from renewable sources as already is being supplied by just one potentially renewable source. About 20 percent of America's energy comes from nuclear energy produced using fuel rods, which, when spent, can be reprocessed into fresh fuel.

Obama is (this is part of liberalism's catechism) leery of nuclear power. He also says -- and might say so even if Nevada were not a swing state -- he distrusts the safety of Nevada's Yucca Mountain for storage of radioactive waste. Evidently he prefers today's situation -- nuclear waste stored at 126 inherently insecure above-ground sites in 39 states, within 75 miles of where more than 161 billion Americans live.

But back to requiring this or that quota of energy from renewable sources. What will that involve? For conservatives, seeing is believing; for liberals, believing is seeing. Obama seems to believe that if a particular outcome is desirable, one can see how to require it. But how does that work? Details to follow, sometime after noon, Jan. 20, 2009.

Sometimes I think that, in order to vote, one should have to be at least as analytical as George Will.

America: You're Guilty Of Racism

Barack Hussein Obama isn't winning by a landslide. There's only one explanation - you're a racist.

Barack Obama, with every natural and structural advantage in the presidential race, is running only neck-and-neck against John McCain, a sub-par Republican nominee with a list of liabilities longer than a Joe Biden monologue. Obama has built a crack political operation, raised record sums, and inspired millions with his eloquence and vision. McCain has struggled with a fractious campaign team, lacks clarity and discipline, and remains a stranger to charisma. Yet at the moment, the two of them appear to be tied. What gives?

If it makes you feel better, you can rationalize Obama's missing 10-point lead on the basis of Clintonite sulkiness, his slowness in responding to attacks, or the concern that Obama may be too handsome, brilliant, and cool to be elected. But let's be honest: If you break the numbers down, the reason Obama isn't ahead right now is that he trails badly among one group, older white voters. He does so for a simple reason: the color of his skin.

Piss of the know-it-alls, vote McCain.

Barack Obama: This Is Not The Joe Biden I Knew

Barack Hussein Obama is against lobbyist cash. Joe Biden rolls in it.

The Center for Responsive Politics has a thorough analysis of Sen. Joe Biden's campaign cash intake now that

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has selected him as his running mate.

The industry that has given Biden the most cash has been lawyers/law firms ($6,567,404) followed by real estate ($1,297,690). Pro-Israel groups are the 8th biggest contributing industry.

Obama may decry lobbyist cash (or at least federal lobbyist cash), but Biden has taken $344,400 from lobbyists since 1997 -- making lobbyists the 10th biggest contributing industry.

That seems a direct contradiction of the Obama message.

Gee! Yah think?

An American Carol: The Ghost of Pauline Kael Past and Present

Lately, I find myself reminded of Pauline Kael, the long time movie critic for New Yorker magazine, who famously expressed her incredulity at Richard Nixon’s landslide victory over George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election: “I don’t know how Nixon could have been reelected. I don't know anyone who voted for him.”

These days, the mainstream media seem entirely populated by Pauline Kaels. In their competition to establish whose reporting can be more worshipful of Barack He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Middle-Named Obama, they cannot imagine that anyone could hold a contrary view. Those who live in this philosophical cocoon cannot understand why public opinion polls do not show Barack Obama winning in a landslide. And you can bet that they are reeling from a Zogby poll earlier this week showing Republican John McCain with a slender lead among likely voters. This was the year of hope and change. This was supposed to be the year when all the stars and computer models agreed that Democrats would win not only the White House, but would gain overwhelming majorities in both houses of Congress. Why even bother with an election?

We’ve been here before. Newsweek magazine’s assistant managing editor Evan Thomas famously stated in 2004 that the press corps, “wants Kerry to win,” and that the media would, “portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and dynamic and optimistic.” He predicted that the media favoritism would be worth up to 15 percentage points.

This season’s campaign started this last spring when the press anointed Obama as the post-racial silver-tongued messiah who would at last lead America out of eight years of wilderness and into the Promised Land. His ever speech was hailed as historic. They filtered contradictory news from their reporting and caricatured John McCain as a fumble-mouthed, befuddled old man clinging tenaciously to a discredited ideology.

One media survey showed that the big television networks’ coverage favored Obama by 3.6 to 1. Washington Post media analyst Howard Kurtz reported this week that, in the big networks, stories that were flattering of Obama outnumbered critical stories by 6 to 1. Howard Kurtz aside, the Post confessed its own bias. This last week, the Post’s ombudsman reported that the paper’s disproportionate coverage of Obama over McCain “didn’t look good.”

The gushing press coverage that Barack Obama received during his world tour was emblematic of the press’s Kael-like disconnect from the real America. Only those media stars in good standing with Obamamania were allowed privileged seating on the campaign plane. And none dared jeopardize that status. Everything that Obama did was perfect. Everything he said was inspiring. Images from the tour deserved to be painted on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, covering those stodgy old Michaelangelo sketches.

And ever since, Obama has sunk in the polls. How can that be? How can NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN all be wrong?

Well, part of Obama’s problem is that the great unwashed, whose ballots count every bit as much as Katie Couric’s, seem to have a longer memory than their media overlords. They know that the incontrovertible wisdom that Barack the Holy espouses today is often at odds with the incontrovertible wisdom that he uttered a few months ago. The great unwashed know that tire gauges will not solve our energy shortage. Americans who are paying over $4 per gallon for gasoline also know that the 6 or 7 years that Obama claims will be needed to derive benefit from new oil exploration represents a much shorter time horizon than any relief they will realize from the science fiction solutions that he advocates. And Americans cannot understand why a man who touts his unfailing judgment as his primary qualification for president cannot recognize that the surge in Iraq worked and that success is firmly in our grasp.

And we should not underestimate Americans’ distrust of the media. The same people who now assure them that Obama is The One are the same people who deliberately ignored John Edwards’ failings. Should Americans trust the judgment of a press corps that cannot compete with the National Enquirer in the field of investigative journalism?

Americans know in their hearts that should John McCain emerge as the winner on the evening of November 4th, the wise men and women of the media will find racism as the only explanation that makes sense. And Americans already resent that.

How else could they explain an Obama loss? After all, no one they knew voted for McCain.

Pest-o-crats Reduced To Fighting Plastic Bags

So now we need a tax on plastic grocery bags? Fresh from having had their fannies handed to them in the Wal-Mart wars, Pullman’s cadre of professional pests have chosen their next futile crusade. They now argue that the town they desire to tyrannize would find itself improved by a new tax. These Pest-o-crats are following their masters in Seattle and San Francisco as they seek to enact a tax on shopping bags. I am not kidding.

The problem, as the Pest-o-crats see it, is that disposable plastic shopping bags are so inexpensive that consumers dispose of them. Once consumers come home with their purchases, they either discard that bag or save it to line their restroom garbage cans. And that is a market condition that Pest-o-crats would like to alter. If consumers were forced to pay 20 cents for each bag, then the great unwashed would choose to lug around those reusable fabric shopping bags. I have no doubt that National Public Radio looks forward to the day when they can reward contributors with NPR embossed reusable grocery bags.

Where would Pullman’s self-anointed elite get such an idea? If you think that it’s original, then you don’t know Pullman’s Pest-o-crats. The inspiration for all such thoughts arise from the most enlightened cities on Earth, Seattle and San Francisco. The Pest-o-crats are simply drones of the great collectives. Because Seattle and San Francisco are the centers of the cultural universe that has given us so much in the past, like grunge rock, drugs, AIDS, Nancy Pelosi and Patty Murray, it makes sense to the Pest-o-crats that the rest of us should bow before the great wisdom that animates these cities. We rubes, who inhabit the east side of the state, have demonstrated that we lack the sophistication needed to make the proper decisions and so we require west side wisdom.

Okay, I will allow that Seattle’s attempts to exert hegemony over Pullman is slightly less crude than Russia’s interference in the Georgian Republic, but the west side’s desire to extinguish cultural diversity throughout Washington is no less determined than Vladimir Putin’s. Seattle already selected our governor and elects our US senators. Seattle raises taxes on the entire state and decides how little of that is permitted to trickle over the Cascades to the east side. For that matter, west of the Cascades, east side is defined as the strip of land that lies between Lake Washington and the Cascades. I’m really not sure what term Seatllistas use to describe the fur-wearing barbarians who inhabit this side of the state.

Like all great imperial powers, Seattle benefits from the advantage of fifth columnists, or native traitors. In Pullman, the fifth columnists are composed of a cadre of moon barking professional pests who move from cause to cause in their quest to impose their vision upon those of us who simply wish the freedom to live our lives as we see fit. And now that they failed to dictate their retail shopping preferences, they’ve moved on to plastic bags.

Chuck Pezeshki, the philosophical guiding light of the Pest-o-crats, demonizes disposable plastic bags as “wind borne litter” and “hazards to wildlife.”

Judging by the waistlines of Pullman’s Pest-o-crats, it is quite probable that I spend a great deal more time out of doors than any of the Pest-o-crats and I’ve never seen a wild animal harmed by a plastic bag. As a volunteer who picks up trash along highway 195 as part the Adopt-a-Highway program, I don’t really encounter as many bags as Pezeshki’s logic suggests should be found out there. Beer cans outnumber plastic bags by a couple of orders of magnitude. The complaints against plastic bags are like global warming, all theory without data.

It’s worth noting that Pezeshki identifies his anti-bag crusaders as consisting “mostly of members of the WSU community.” In my own experience, such is the composition of most such movements because tenured university faculty are free from the burdens of productivity that hobble the rest of the world and that leaves them plenty of free time that they can devote to telling the rest of us how to live.

If we let them get away with this, the Pest-o-crats certainly have other Seattle ideas waiting for us. For example the Emerald City’s mayor would now like to close off much of downtown to automobile traffic on Sundays. This would make room for artists to decorate the streets with chalk drawings. Really!

The New York Times Arrogant Self-Serving Introspection

The New York Times evaluates the mainstream media's reluctance to pursue inconvenient news.

A number of news organizations with resources far greater than The Enquirer’s, like The New York Times, say they looked into the Edwards matter and found nothing solid enough to report, while others did not look at all.

Really! The Times looked into this and found nothing? Where did you look? Were you gazing into your own navel?

[M]any news organizations — including The New York Times — weighed in only after ABC News announced on Friday that it had an interview with Mr. Edwards, in which he admitted the affair but denied paternity.

“These kinds of allegations fly around about just about every candidate,” said Leonard Downie Jr., executive editor of The Washington Post, which had not written about the affair until Friday. “We checked them out and we asked questions, and at no time did we have any facts to report.”

Somehow, these so-called reporters managed not to find what they really didn't want to find. As Phil Bronstein, former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle phrased it, the MSM pursued this story as though they “picking at it with their noses held, as if looking for something valuable in a moldy dumpster.”

He's giving them too much credit. If there was something of value in that dumpster, they consciously and intentionally ignored it. If it were lying on the street in front of they, they would have stepped over it, pretending not to notice.

CNN, which first mentioned the affair on Friday, “had been working the story since it first broke in The Enquirer late last year,” said Sam Feist, the political director. “We sent people to Chapel Hill, we sent people to California.”

But, he said, “Edwards denied it, the woman denied it,” and “you have to have some sort of evidence before you put something on the air.”

Gee! Who would have thought that Edwards and Hunter might lie? Is it really that easy to fool CNN?

Paul Friedman, senior vice president of CBS News, said the network did not actively pursue the story when it broke last fall. Asked if that was because it had first appeared in The National Enquirer, he said, “Exactly.”

Aside from the self-inflicted myopic elitism of that statement, it still does not address the fact that the Enquirer, with its limited resources scooped the MSM on a story that really was of significant consequence. What if Edwards had won the nomination and this story broke in October? What it he had been elected? Wouldn't this leave the most powerful man in the world vulnerable to blackmail?

The New York Times looked into the Enquirer reports last fall, though none too aggressively, editors said.

Bill Keller, the executive editor, said in an e-mail message that Mr. Edwards’s dark-horse status and the “added hold-your-nose quality about The Enquirer” contributed to the lack of interest by The Times and the mainstream media generally.

Considering the low threshold that the New York Times held itself to before insinuating that John McCain had an affair with a lady lobbyist, perhaps it is the Times that is the more deserving of nose holding.

John Edwards Affair: The Real Story

It's really not such a big deal to learn that little Johnny Edwards was having an extramarital affair. Narcissistic egomaniacs have long considered that a birthright. The real news is that the mainstream media actively covered up for him. As Glenn Reynolds tartly phrases it: "SO NOW THAT WE KNOW THAT THE PRESS COVERED FOR EDWARDS -- just as, pre-invasion, they covered for Saddam -- that raises a question: What else are they not telling us for fear it will hurt the Democrats' prospects?"

The Media Pornographication Of Shasta Groene's Horror

I suppose that this is one of those issues that require a degree in journalism to understand. Maybe it requires a graduate degree and many years of experience. Certainly nobody without specialized training would place the sensibilities of a middle-aged woman above those of a frail, traumatized child. If you have been formally trained in journalistic ethics, then you might understand this. Although I doubt that the rest of us would have the slightest chance of grasping the nuance of contributing to the suffering of a little girl while protecting a mature political hack.

A little over 3 years ago, Joseph Duncan attacked a family in their home in North Idaho. He brutally murdered three people and kidnapped two young children. The crime was so gruesome and sensational that I learned of it on the news while working in El Salvador.

Duncan tortured and molested the kidnapped children, and ultimately murdered the boy, Dylan Groene. The girl, Shasta Groene, was rescued and is now scheduled to testify at Duncan’s penalty trial, where he stands to receive the death penalty.

The judge presiding over the case decided that justice could just as easily be served if the media were not permitted to record and doubtless sensationalize Shasta Groene’s recollections. Certainly, after all she has gone through, she does not need to have her schoolmates reading about her experiences and she does not need to have her story immortalized for public viewing on mainstream media websites. A just world would consider it a moral obligation to spare the child any more emotional distress. Sadly, the mainstream news media do not seem to be of this just and moral world.

The mainstream media have filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the judge’s ruling. The media believe that Shasta’s torment should be splashed on the front pages and should lead off the evening news for all to read and see. I’m sure that all of you are looking forward to the pornographic details of Joseph Duncan’s molestation of little Shasta.

It’s not as though the mainstream news media are incapable of compassion. In fact, the primary reason given for why you probably have not read a juicy story about a prominent Democratic politician is out of consideration for his middle aged wife.

Several months ago, the National Enquirer super market tabloid reported that John Edwards, the former U.S. senator from North Carolina, who was twice a candidate for president and the 2004 Democratic nominee for vice president, had fathered a child with a former videographer for his recent presidential campaign. The mainstream media did their best to ignore the story, in spite of the fact that early in the primary season, he was polling even with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He really was a serious contender at the time. Nevertheless, the mainstream media chose to ignore the story. And so it languished, until now.

The National Enquirer once again did what the mainstream media once did: It pursued and investigated the story. And a couple of weeks ago, the Enquirer, acting on a tip, caught Edwards entering a hotel room occupied by the woman who bore the child and kept watch until he left the room in the early morning hours.

Once again, the mainstream media have refused to report the story, even though Edwards was at the time under consideration for a vice presidential nomination and, failing that, was considered likely to gain appointment to a Barack Obama cabinet, should the horror of an Obama presidency come to pass, probably as Attorney General.

One might think that the media that disseminated the New Times’ baseless innuendo about a supposed affair between John McCain and a lady lobbyist would be equally as eager to report on John Edwards’ peccadillo. But you’d be wrong. But lest you think that ideology and party affiliation influenced the decision, pay attention to what longtime mainstream journalist and former New Republic writer Mickey Kaus discovered during his inquiries into the affair.

He learned that the reason that NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and all major newspapers are ignoring this story is their sympathy for John Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Edwards is dying of cancer. And it’s very thoughtful of the media to take that into consideration, even though she and her husband exploited her illness for political gain when it suited them.

But if the media will muzzle itself in consideration of a sick, middle-aged woman, then why can’t it exercise similar restraint when the psyche of a little girl is in the balance?

Scientists Treat 10 Maladies With Adult Stem Cells

If you wonder why Democrats have given up politicking on fetal stem cells, this is the biggest reason why. After all, why kill babies to harvest their stem cells when you can use adult stem cells.

Dr. George Daley and his colleagues at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute used ordinary skin cells and bone marrow from people with a variety of diseases, including Parkinson's, Huntington's and Down syndrome to produce the stem cells.

The new cells will allow researchers to "watch the disease progress in a dish, that is, to watch what goes right or wrong," Doug Melton, co-director of the institute, said during a teleconference.

"I think we'll see in years ahead that this opens the door to a new way to treating degenerative diseases," he said.

Obama: America Is Not A Place Where He Would Want His Children To Grow Up

“America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children.”

But, don't you dare question his patriotism.

Gateway Pundit has the story and a fine collection of Obamisms, B. Hussein and his wife's.

T. Boonedoggle

T. Boone Pickens has been spending an awful lot of money promoting his energy plan. I don't care how Republican Mr. Pickens has been in the past, this plan of his has the stink of economic centralized planning. And, if it smell like a piece of shit, it probably is.
The Wall Street Journal has it's take on the plan and comes to the same conclusion, but in kinder terms.

Al Gore's Newer, Bigger Carbon Footprint

Three energy hog mansions, private planes, and now a new yacht.

It happens in the air, where he jets about in private planes that consume massive amounts of energy to spread his message of “conservation.”

His hypocrisy is revealed on land, where he travels in fleets of limos and SUVs to deliver speeches about the dire consequences of ignoring “man-made global warming” — and leaves the cars running throughout his entire speech in order to ensure that they will be nice and cool when he exits the building and returns to his gas-guzzling vehicles.

His supposedly “green” mansion consumes electricity that dwarfs the consumption of the typical family home.

And now, in order to complete his hypocrisy trifecta, Al Gore may now be extending his excessive consumption to the water as well. In an amazing display of conspicuous consumption, even for Al Gore, his new 100-foot houseboat that docks at the Hurricane Marina in Smithville, Tennessee is creating a critical buzz among many of his former congressional constituents. Dubbed “Bio-Solar One,” which may reflect some latent Air Force One envy, Gore has proudly strutted the small-town dock claiming that his monstrous houseboat is environmentally friendly. (Only Al Gore would name his boat B.S. One and not get the joke. Or perhaps the joke is on us?

Barack Obama: That Was Not The Barack Obama I Knew

And, it's not the John McCain Barack Hussein Obama thought he knew.

"Democratic candidate Barack Obama criticized Republican John McCain on Tuesday for taking a page out of "the Cheney playbook" on energy, overlooking his own support of oil-friendly policies that the unpopular vice president helped to craft.

Vice President Dick Cheney, a former oilman, early in the Bush administration helped draft an energy policy that Obama asserted is biased in favor of tax breaks and favorable treatment for big oil. Obama's remarks were an attempt to capitalize on Cheney's unpopularity...

....However, Obama himself voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production, a measure Cheney played a major role in developing. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included billions in unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry."

I'm surprised that the Associated Press picked this up. I kinda doubt that it will make news anywhere else though.

The Giant Black Balls Of Obama

But of course, that couldn't save Keith Olbermann from falling for it.

KEITH OLBERMANN: What about when it backfires? Because it seems like the celebrity ad continues to echo. And Bob Herbert of the New York Times was on this network pointing out something I don't know that anybody noticed before this morning. That not only in that McCain ad where there two underdressed blondes mixed with the black guy in the ad, but there were also images of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Washington Monument, and the Victory Column in Berlin -- as Bob Herbert put it, "phallic symbols." Three phallic symbols, two blondes and Barack Obama. So this is not just a sexist ad anymore. This is what they used to called "miscegenation," isn't it? This is what they used against Harold Ford.

JONATHAN ALTER, NEWSWEEK: Well, to suggest that somehow, you know, Obama's going to-

OLBERMANN: He's going to wind up dating those women-

ALTER: Yeah.

OLBERMANN: That's the idea.

ALTER: That's the oldest and deepest racist, you know, canard in American history, really, is that, you know, the slave is going to come after the wife of the plantation owner. I can't, sort of, dissect and decode these ads that way. I just, somehow maybe my media literacy is lacking. I didn't read that out of those ads, but I can see how some people would. And the larger issue, I think, is clear, which is they're trying to portray him as being uppity. Now, is that racist? I'm not sure, you know.

OLBERMANN: Well, if we're playing Password and you say "uppity," the word that comes into my mind, that's racist, yes. Yes.

ALTER: Yes. That is clearly what the larger subtext is. As for the phallic stuff, I'll leave that to others.

OLBERMANN: Well, all right, we'll just drop it there.

America Is Catching On To Obama

The facade is cracking, even among his second most loyal constituencies.

Barack Obama has lost ground among some of his strongest bases of support, including young people, women, Democrats and independents, according to a new ATV/Zogby poll.

The Illinois Democrat has also lost some support among African-Americans and Hispanics, where his lead over Republican John McCain has shrunk, and among Catholics, where he's lost his lead.

The net result, pollster John Zogby found, is a race that's neck and neck, with McCain supported by 42 percent; Obama by 41 percent; Libertarian Bob Barr by 2 percent; and independent Ralph Nader by 2 percent. Another 13 percent supported other candidates or were undedcided.

Zogby called the results a "notable turnaround" from a July survey he did that showed Obama leading by 46-36.

His most loyal constituency is still on board.

Game On: No New Energy

Nancy Pelosi has just handed the November election to the Republicans, if they have the stones to accept the gift.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday ruled out a vote on new offshore oil drilling even as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said he might be open to a compromise that included it.

The scramble over expanded drilling off America's coasts — ammunition for a weekend of rat-a-tat-tat by the presidential campaigns — underscores the political power of $4-a-gallon gas. Though President Bush and other backers of new drilling acknowledge it wouldn't directly affect gas prices for years, they have pounded Democrats for opposing the measure, which is now supported by most Americans.

Do the Republicans want to win? Well, last Friday's demonstration showed promise. Let's see if there's some follow through.

We'll see. Supposedly a few Republican rebels are preparing to restart their demonstration.

Continuing with their guerilla tactics from last week, House Republicans will be back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices, even though Congress is in recess, and they may stay there all week.

More than a dozen Republicans have already committed to make appearances, according to House GOP leadership aide, including National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.).

Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) and Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who led Friday's five-hour talkathon after the House shut down for the August recess, are also expected to be there, according to this aide.

"In an urgent memo sent to GOP Members and staff Saturday (“A Call to Action on American Energy”), Republican Leader John Boehner (R-) and Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) hailed Friday’s action, and encouraged House Republicans to return to the Capitol beginning Monday morning to help keep the historic effort going," said a press release just released by Minority Leader Boehner's office.

This is a winning issue. If there is any one issue that clearly divides Democrats from Republicans on an issue that is of paramount importance to voters, it's energy policy. And Republicans are on the winning side on this issue. Americans favor new drilling by a 2-1 margin.

Update: Is it possible that some Republicans are getting it?

McCain supporters in Michigan will distribute tire gauges at Obama’s energy speech in Lansing.

The RNC will also deliver gauges reading “Obama’s energy plan” to Washington newsrooms.

And another one bites the dust.

Al Qaeda has confirmed that Abu Khabab al Masri, the chief of the terror group's weapons of mass destruction program, was killed in an airstrike in South Waziristan, Pakistan earlier this week.

Khabab was one of the most wanted terrorists due to his experience, seniority, and expertise with bomb making, chemicals, and poisons. The US Rewards for Justice Program has a $5 million bounty out for the capture of Khabab.

More Change You're Expected To Believe In

He was against new oil exploration before he was for it.

Barack Obama said Friday that he would be willing to compromise on his position against offshore oil drilling if it were part of a more overarching strategy to lower energy costs.

“My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama told The Palm Beach Post early into a two-day swing through Florida.

I'm looking forward to him lecturing reporters about he has not changed his mind and he's always been consistent on this issue.

Obama Bringeth Plentiful Oil Upon The Land - And Saw That It Was Good

Let it be said that Barack Hussein Obama doth bringeth upon the land plentiful oil for our cars from a tire pump. And, he saw that it was good. Truly, he is The One. This week just passeth, Barack Obama showed that we must send the Bible back to the editors for updates and revisions. Certainly we will need to add a few new chapters, maybe even an entire “Modern Testament,” dedicated to proclaiming and witnessing for the new messiah.

Following up his Berlin address to the “citizens of the world” (inexplicably delivered in English), Obama descended upon this great land from the heavens and declared himself the chosen one, a task that Jesus left to others. On Monday, before swooning disciples he declared: “This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.”

The following day, he spoke before an audience of unbiased journalists who gave him multiple standing ovations.

And he was just getting warmed up. After declaring himself The One and bringing unbiased journalists to their feet in applause, he stepped forth on Wednesday and solved the oil shortage in a most messianic fashion: “We could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling by making sure your tires are properly inflated.”

Truly it is a miracle. The 10 billion barrels of oil locked up by Congress in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the 18 billion barrels locked up by Congress along the outer continental shelf, the 90 billion barrels elsewhere in the arctic, and the forbidden 1 trillion barrels in oil shale can all be replaced by airing up our tires? Who knew? Surely we need no more signs to reveal The One to us. But it’s worth reviewing the signs given us so far.

When thirst threatened the Jews in the Sinai wilderness, all that Moses managed to do was strike water from a rock. Big deal! When you think about it, that’s not so different from drilling a well. Jesus fed thousands with but 5 loaves of bread and two fishes. But anybody who has dined in an elegant restaurant recently knows all about small portions. Surely, Barack Hussein Obama’s oil miracle surpasses all who came before.

And when we start viewing Barack Hussein Obama in the light of a true messiah and not simply a candidate for the most powerful office in the world, his supposed lack of experience comes into new perspective. What were Moses’ credentials? He was nothing more than the spoiled, adopted son of a pharaoh. Jesus was naught but a carpenter and a fisherman before embarking upon his ministry. Where in either of their work histories does one find the qualifications for the roles into which they stepped? The preparations do not measure up to Obama’s. Not only did Barack Hussein Obama spend two whole years in the United States Senate before declaring his candidacy but, previously he worked with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). So he certainly knows all about voter fraud.

And what about that blank space on Barack Hussein Obama’s resume under the heading for “accomplishments?” Well, Barack Obama helped Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan, organize the Million Man March. Is that so different from Moses leading the Egypt’s Jews to the Promised Land?

Jesus attracted a sizable crowd to the Temple Mount, but did he have rock bands as warm up acts, as Obama did in Portland and Berlin?

And how dare anyone point out Barack Hussein Obama's unsavory associations? Certainly Barack Obama sat for more than two decades listening to the sermons of an America hating racist. And he does count among his friends a couple of domestic terrorists whose only regrets are that they didn’t detonate enough bombs. He has wallowed in the company of the corrupt political fixers that have tainted the Chicago political scene for generations. And he numbers among his closest advisers people involved in the subprime mortgage scandal and the man who enabled the pardon auction that Bill Clinton held at the end of the reign. But didn’t Jesus himself mix with prostitutes and Roman tax collectors? After all, if you’re going to spread the word, you have to go where the sinners are.

So, follow your mainstream news media overlords at ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN, and bow down before Barack Hussein Obama. He is the chosen one – chosen by them.

Obama's Amazingly Stupid Idea

If you thought that John McCain and Hillary Clinton's plan to relieve gas prices by temporarily suspending federal gas taxes was dumb, it looks like sheer genius compared to Barack Hussein Obama's idea.

The first part of Obama’s plan is an emergency energy rebate ($500 to individual workers, $1,000 to families) as soon as this fall.

“This rebate will be enough to offset the increased cost of gas for a working family over the next four months,” Obama said. “Or, if you live in a state where it gets very cold in the winter, it will be enough to cover the entire increase in your heating bills. Or you could use the rebate for any of your other bills or even to pay down debt.

I guess Barack Hussein Obama doesn't read the news. There ain't no recession. And the 5.7% unemployment rate was considered good stuff when Clinton was president.

But, here's the best part:

Friday’s proposal says Obama “is proposing to offset the cost of his emergency energy rebates over the next five years by enacting a windfall profits tax on big oil companies.”

“Obama simply asks that big oil companies contribute a reasonable share of the windfall profits they receive from high oil prices over the next five years to pay for emergency assistance for families right now,” the campaign says.

This is like scooping water from one end of a bathtub and dumping it the other. These taxes will simply be passed on in the form of higher prices at the pump. Now, if Barack Hussein Obama really wants to give the American consumer a break.....

When You've Lost Hollywood......

I suppose you lose Hollywood.

That's why the reaction to a new John McCain ad attempting to portray Barack Obama as a kind of mindless celebrity -- likening him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- drew collective yawns and shrugs of irritation from politically active members of the entertainment industry.

"I didn't think McCain could look silly," mused Norman Lear. "But that ad diminishes him and makes him look silly."

Has Norman Lear ever voted for a Republican?

Really now, how many McCain supporters are there in Hollywood after all?
