The New York Times Talks Sense!?!?

A rare moment of lucidity seized the New York Times editorial board today. President Bush tried to speak to Americans as if they were adults earlier this week and the networks immeidately labelled that attempt a "gaffe." And the Kerry/Edwards campaign opportunistically leaped on it too.

Bush told us that we will never "win" the war on terror. Well duh! But Kerry and Edwards immediately announced that they would. Yeah. Sure. Just as we're winning the war on poverty, right?

Or as the Times sensibly put it, "President Bush was absolutely right when he said it was impossible to win a war against terrorism - it's like announcing we can win a war against violence. Terrorism can only be minimized and controlled, and that can be done only with a worldwide strategy, joined by all of the world's sensible and peaceful nations. We hope that when Mr. Bush accepts his party's nomination for re-election tonight, he makes that argument."

The Times scolds Kerry and Edwards for bringing simple mindedness to the debate and then goes on to advise Bush on what he should say tonight about terror.

The real question is, even if Bush did say exactly what the Times recommends and Kerry/Edwards continue their childlike sniping, would the Times endorse Bush?

You can stop your laughing now.
