It's Reagan's fault - according to Ted Koppel. If you're as dumb as Ted Koppel, then you need to know that it was Jimmy Carter who paved the way for the Iranian theocracy in the first place. It seems likely that if Carter had acted immediately and forcefully after the US embassy was seized, then the Iranian regime would not have been able to use the hostage crisis to cement their grip on the country. As Koppel notes, Carter did allow this episode to drag on for 15 months.
