If Only the Wildfires Had Occurred Earlier

If Only the Wildfires Had Occurred Earlier

Suddenly, Gray Davis is a statesman, and not a cynical, corrupt, calculating politician. E. J. Dionne laments that, "A Hero is on his Way Out."

Before the fires, he was a terrible governor, "Then came Southern California's wildfires, and suddenly Davis was everywhere. The buttoned-up guy was unbuttoned. He appeared in open-necked shirts, reached out to those who had lost everything, urged firefighters on and cooperated visibly with Schwarzenegger."

Dionne seems to believe that Davis only needed a crisis to prove himself a good governor he really was. Maybe he needed to forcibly removed from politics to stop acting like a politician.
