RFK Jr.'s Wife Charged With Drunk Driving

She's just carrying on an old family tradition.

The wife of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was charged with drunk driving in New York last weekend, the latest painful public incident for a family plagued with substance abuse.

Westchester’s Journal News reported Tuesday that Mary Richardson Kennedy, 50, was arrested Saturday night – and that police records showed a "domestic incident" at the couple's home in tony Bedford two days earlier.

A source close to Robert Kennedy, a son of the assassinated senator and presidential candidate, said the incident was connected to Mrs. Kennedy’s drinking.

“She’s out of control and that’s all that it had to do with – but it’s her demeanor not Bobby’s,” said the source. “It’s very sad.”

The officers spent 48 minutes at the Kennedy home on Thursday, and filed a state “domestic incident report,” the paper said. They had spent 1 hour and 17 minutes at the home on another call three days earlier.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. overcame his own reported substance abuse problems – he was arrested for heroin possession as a young man – to emerge as a sort of family elder statesman and a prominent figure in New York politics.
