Homs Being Evacuated

Syria's reformer president has just about blasted the city of Homs to dust. But he's mercifully allowing the evacuation of the surviving children before he finishes the job.

A spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross told CNN that a mission to evacuate some of those wounded in the recent Syrian military assault on a besieged neighborhood in the city of Homs began on Friday at about 8 p.m. local time.

The spokeswoman, Carla Haddad Mardini, said that I.C.R.C. staff members had negotiated with both government and rebels forces in Baba Amr, a center of opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, to evacuate women and children injured in the bombardment of the area. The team was working in collaboration with volunteers from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
