Gregroire Democrats - Pettiness On Steroids

Is the governor of Washington a man? Or, more to the point, is the governor trying to deceive the voters into believing that she is a man? Why else would Christine Gregoire insist upon being called “Chris” and why does she appear under that name on the ballot and on her campaign posters?

I ask this question because the Washington state Democratic Party is suing to force her general election opponent, Dino Rossi, to identify himself as “Republican” rather than “prefers GOP” on the ballot. According to the Democrats, Rossi is attempting to conceal his real party identification to deceive the voters who loathe Republicans, but don’t know what this GOP thing is all about.

Now I will concede that it is an established fact that Democrats are less educated and less well informed on the issues than Republicans. And it is remotely possible that here and there in Seattle one might find an occasional soul, sleeping on a grate or inside a cardboard box, who is unaware that GOP and Republican Party are one and the same. And it is even possible that Obama’s former employer, The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), has registered a few of these people to vote, perhaps more than once. But many of these people have already promised to trade their vote to Democrats for a pint of whiskey and aren’t going to be influenced by the opponent’s party affiliation. And so I find it highly unlikely that there will be even a small number of unpurchased voters showing up at the polls who will be confused by the substitution of “prefers GOP” for “Republican.” Would anyone who knows the location of their polling station cast a vote for a new third party calling itself the Gops?

Supposedly, the Democrats have data showing that Dino Rossi polls significantly better as “GOP” rather than “Republican.” But I find it hard to believe that even the Seattle Public School System could turn out voters that ignorant.

But, if the Democrats persist in this childish endeavor, then I would encourage the Republicans to file a lawsuit of their own requiring Christine Gregoire’s full name to appear on the ballot. What’s she trying to hide with this silly “Chris” business? Her attempt to conceal her gender is far more objectionable that the late Helen Chenoweth’s insistence that she be called a “congressman.”

I can still recall the fulminating fury of the left when she asked to be addressed in that strictly formal manner.

The state’s Democratic Party is the trained pet of Christine Gregoire, and if it has gone to the trouble of determining if Dino Rossi’s appeal is influenced by whether or not he labels his party affiliation as GOP or Republican, then you can be certain that they’ve done the same with Governor Gregoire’s first name. And personally, I would not be at all surprised to learn that voters would prefer a male-sounding name over a female-sounding name, especially when one considers what airheads both of Washington’s US senators have turned out to be. That pair has got to be bad for the brand name. Perhaps Ms. Gregoire should try to convince those two to rename themselves “Patrick” and “Mario.”

Washington’s Secretary of State, Sam Reed, argues that the time for these sorts of challenges has passed: “The time to object was before candidate filings in the first week of June,” he said. “Now counties have actually sent their ballots to the printers. The timing is really bad for an issue we thought had been pretty well resolved earlier.”

Washington’s Democratic Party chairman is the snarky Dwight Pelz. He answers that the issue is more important than a few ballots printed in Washington’s backwaters.

Forcing this change is more “important than whether two to three small counties have started to print their ballot. I know they haven't started to print in King County.”

So sorry Dwight. As it turns out, King County is one of those insignificant backwaters. According to King County elections officials, the county has already printed several thousand ballots. One would think that as a King County Councilman, Dwight Pelz would have known that, but he’s already had more important items on his agenda than the affairs of the county he was elected to govern.

And besides, he should be taking the long view on this one. Once the truth about the financial meltdown finally emerges, he might want the freedom to choose a new name for his own party affiliation.

As of July 31 of this year, Wall Street barons had poured nearly $10 million into Obama’s campaign. Specifically, employees of Lehman Brothers, the securities firm that declared bankruptcy Monday, had given Obama $370,524. And in the last ten years, only Christopher Dodd (D-Connecticut) raked in more money from Fannie Mae than Obama, and Obama has only been in the Senate four years. His annual take was actually twice Dodd’s. Does this foretell change you believe in?

Before he was forced out under an ethical cloud, Obama economic advisor and former Fanny Mae CEO Franklin Raines soaked Fannie Mae for $100 million in just six years. He was accused of instituting accounting gimmicks that exaggerated Fannie Mae’s earnings. Can anyone say “Enron?” Former Clinton Administration Attorney General Janet Reno and her Justice Department lieutenant, Jamie Gorelick, squeezed $75 million out of Fannie Mae’s rotting carcass for their own bank accounts.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Mars) blamed the Bush Administration and proclaimed the Democrats faultless. But, in 1999 the seeds of today’s disaster were sowed when two major changes were made to the banking laws and regulations. That year, Bill Clinton signed a law that dramatically deregulated banks. That law passed the House by a 362-57 margin and by 90-8 in the Senate. At the time, the all-knowing news media declared it a long overdue modernization. But, in addition, Clinton imposed new regulations intended to facilitate home ownership by minorities. His new rules forced lenders to write loans for people whose credit ratings would have prevented them from getting loans in the first place. One of the methods lenders employed to satisfy Clinton’s goal was the subprime mortgage – a practice now condemned as predatory by the same people who forced it upon lenders in the first place. More than half of all mortgages held by African Americans are sub-prime and about 40% of Hispanic mortgages are sub-prime.

I spent about 30 minutes searching the New York Times for news stories regarding the regulation of the financial markets, and I came across this gem from the September 11, 2003 edition. The Bush Administration saw peril in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae management and proposed a new and stronger oversight agency to oversee the mortgage giants. From that article: “The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt -- is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates,” the Times wrote.

But the reforms were thwarted by, “Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing,” wrote the Times.

“These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,’ said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ‘The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

And so, to preserve the regulations that forced lenders to write doomed loans, Congressional Democrats killed stricter oversight that may very well have prevented the crisis we have today.

A further search found numerous efforts by the Bush Administration to reign in fiscal mismanagement at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In December of 2003 the Times reports that “Freddie Mac Gets Penalty And Rebuke Over Scandal,” for improper accounting that overstated earnings. In the spring of 2004 a headline read: “Fannie Mae Says Its Equity Fell By $1.6 Billion In First Quarter.” Also in 2004, the Bush Administration proposed stricter regulation of Fannie Mae to, “'reduce the potential for future corporate misconduct.”

In 2005, the year Franklin Raines was forced out, John McCain proposed stricter controls that were not enacted.

The crooks responsible for this crisis are now Obama advisors. For example Obama chose Jim Johnson, another scandal-plagued former Fannie Mae CEO, to help him pick his vice presidential candidate. There is plenty of blame to go around. But considering his associations and the fact that Obama can’t even bring himself to criticize corrupt Chicago politics, there is no reason to believe that he’s The One to clean things up.

Democrats Don't Even Vote Present On The Economy

By comparison, Barack Hussein Obama's habit of voting present on difficult issues is beginning to look pretty good compared to Congressional Democrats, who are likely to adjourn rather than address the nation's financial woes.

The Democratic-controlled Congress, acknowledging that it isn't equipped to lead the way to a solution for the financial crisis and can't agree on a path to follow, is likely to just get out of the way.

Lawmakers say they are unlikely to take action before, or to delay, their planned adjournments -- Sept. 26 for the House of Representatives, a week later for the Senate. While they haven't ruled out returning after the Nov. 4 elections, they would rather wait until next year unless Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, who are leading efforts to contain the crisis, call for help.

One reason, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday, is that ``no one knows what to do'' at the moment.

Although, now that I think about it, had the Democrats spent more time away from Washington, we probably wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

Team Obama's national security spokeswoman Wendy Morigi declared that the article bore, "as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial."

Then she said, "In fact, Obama had told the Iraqis that they should not rush through a "Strategic Framework Agreement" governing the future of US forces until after President George W. Bush leaves office."

On the other hand, maybe she's confirming the accuracy of McCain's campaign ads.

According to Amir Taheri, writing in today's New York Post, Barack (He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) Obama interfered with Iraqi-US negotiations for the purpose of harming the United States.

WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

But, doesn't Barack Hussein Obama want American troops to come home as soon as possible? Well, he has bigger fish to fry, delegitimizing pre-emptive war as a foreign policy.

Obama has given Iraqis the impression that he doesn't want Iraq to appear anything like a success, let alone a victory, for America. The reason? He fears that the perception of US victory there might revive the Bush Doctrine of "pre-emptive" war - that is, removing a threat before it strikes at America.

Despite some usual equivocations on the subject, Obama rejects pre-emption as a legitimate form of self -defense. To be credible, his foreign-policy philosophy requires Iraq to be seen as a failure, a disaster, a quagmire, a pig with lipstick or any of the other apocalyptic adjectives used by the American defeat industry in the past five years.

I've always thought that vegetarians were a little short on brain cells. Now I know why.

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.

And being overweight or obese is linked to brain loss, Swedish researchers discovered. Scans of around 300 women found that those with brain shrink had an average body mass index of 27 And for every one point increase in their BMI the loss rose by 13 to 16%.

Can Obama and Biden Sink Any Lower?

Aside from alluding to McCain's age, the e-mail crack really stinks. Because, if Team Obama had done even a little research, they would have learned that McCain can't use a computer keyboard because of disabilities inflicted on him by Obama's fellow travelers at the Hanoi Hilton.

Does McCain Know Who His Constituency Is?

If John McCain should bumble his way to victory in November, he might have the New York Times to thank. This last February, after it became clear that McCain was the default nominee of the Republicans, the Times published on its front page a poorly sourced story intimating that McCain was involved in an affair with an attractive lady lobbyist. The story was untrue and John McCain was justifiably outraged. And from that moment on, McCain, a man who forgives slowly, finally grasped that the mainstream media, whose good opinions he had cultivated for years, were not his friends.

All politicians are flawed. The single greatest defect in our political system is that we can only choose our leaders from those who consider themselves worthy of the job. William F. Buckley once opined that he would rather be governed by 100 people chosen randomly from a phone book than by the faculty of the Harvard law school. And the higher the political office, the more distrustful we should be of the candidate. Anyone who thinks that he should be president surely suffers from one or more profound personality disorders. But it is from among these people whom we must choose to give the authority to launch nuclear weapons.

John McCain’s most obvious disorder is that he constantly needs approval. And for the last decade or so, he has pursued the approval of the mainstream media. He wanted to read favorable editorials about himself in the Washington Post and the New York Times. He sought as many invitations to “Meet the Press” as he could gain. In both cases, like a trained seal desirous of a fish, he learned that he could earn his reward by pursuing goals contrary to the Republican Party and conservatism.

This need for approval from Washington’s Brahman caste and his own moral vanity would drive him to push the McCain campaign finance reform bill through Congress. Not only did the liberal pundits love it, but he believed that it also helped him wash away his greatest stain – the Keating Five scandal.

Just about two decades ago, John McCain was scolded by the Senate for intervening on behalf of his close friend, Charles Keating. Under Keating’s leadership, Lincoln Savings and Loan had invested recklessly and he found himself in difficulty with bank regulators. He asked his close personal friend, John McCain, along with four others to whom he had donated generously, to intervene on his behalf. Ultimately, McCain received the gentlest of scoldings, while others were censured and three lost their seats in the Senate.

McCain could never accept full responsibility for his choices and blamed “the system” for his embarrassment. And so he set about to change the system. The result was the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform act, which was very popular in mainstream media newsrooms and editorial boards. McCain probably thought that he had finally won the approval of those whose opinions mattered most to him. The New York Times showed him that he was mistaken. All those years of thumbing his nose at conservatism and his own party had earned him nothing. And it was this revelation that drove him to win back the conservative base. And his campaign has prospered ever since.

His new embrace of conservatism certainly contributed to his selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee. The John McCain whose greatest ambition was the approval of the New York Time’s editorial board would never have chosen Sarah Palin. A candidate who lusted for favorable treatment by the Washington Post newsroom would never have embraced Newt Gingrich’s “Drill Here, Drill Now” campaign.

Not only did McCain’s sudden conservatism solidify his base, but it has thrown the opposition off its game. The left has descended into all manner of slur in its attempt to damage Sarah Palin, even to the point of attacking her children. Barack Obama has been exposed as a man who cannot handle adversity well. Faced with a genuine challenge for the first time in his political career, he seems unable to gain his footing.

Now Obama is reduced to complaining that too much attention is being paid to his remark about “lipstick on a pig,” and is trying to refocus attention on issues that really matter, such as how many homes John McCain’s wife owns.

It remains to be seen if McCain can be trusted after November 5th. But thanks to the reprehensible behavior of the left-leaning mainstream media, perhaps John McCain will remember who his real constituency is.

No, I don't think that Obama is a crypto-Muslim. I believe that he is an adherent to the Black Liberation Theology Jeremiah Wright preached at his church for the 22 years that Obama was a member there. Frankly, I don't think Black Liberation Christianity is an improvement on radical Islam.

Gregoire: Pay No Attention To That Deficit Behind The Curtain

What does Washington governor Christine Gregoire know that no one else in state government knows? All throughout the gubernatorial campaign her Republican opponent, Dino Rossi, has accused the governor of a profligate spending spree that has driven the state’s balance sheet deep into the red with deeper shades of crimson on the horizon. But, at a campaign stop last week called “Drinking Liberally, held at the Montlake Ale House in Seattle, Ms Gregoire denied that the state is facing a budget deficit.

Answering a question from a blogger who inquired about that supposed deficit, Madam Governor insisted that all was well. “Thirty states are now sitting on a deficit: we are one of the few in surplus. We are the envy of the country.”

Well, if wishes were fishes and all that... But, it’s not as though Dino Rossi is cooking the books with some like-minded Republicans who wish to embarrass the governor in an election year. The prediction of a deficit comes from the Democrat-controlled Senate Ways and Means Committee. While Washington may yet emerge from the current biennium with a small surplus (although that’s unlikely), the Senate Ways and Means Committee predicts a $2.7 billion deficit for the next biennium and a $5.5 billion deficit in the next.

The prediction that this biennium will end with a small surplus will probably have to be revised sharply downward soon as the state was counting on revenues derived from a sizzling real estate market that the state was hoping would stay hot indefinitely. Has anyone heard of the real estate bubble or the subprime lending crisis? Perhaps Governor Gregoire has been too busy campaigning to pick up a newspaper in the last year or so.

Current events have been a common problem with northwest Democrats lately. About three days into Russia’s invasion of the Georgian Republic, Oregon’s Democratic US Senate candidate Jeff Merkley was asked for his opinion on the matter. He seemed quite surprised to learn that a state in the southeastern United States had been invaded and only after some clarification did he realize that it was that other Georgia. While the rest of the world had been watching it on television and reading about it in the newspapers, the invasion was news to him. It’s fitting that Oregon might elect Merkley to serve alongside Ron Wyden who couldn’t find Bosnia on a globe after the US went to war on that country’s behalf.

But, I digress.

If Ms. Gregoire did read newspapers, then she might have picked up the July 20th edition of the Seattle Times, which had a lengthy article detailing the irresponsible spending increases under her leadership. In just four years, the state’s budget has soared by 8 billion dollars as she shoveled money into the pockets of the special interest groups who helped underwrite her 2004 election and whom she’s counting on this year.

In addition, Ms Gregoire turned away revenues that rightly belonged to the state when she signed a pact with Indian gambling interests that excused them from having to share their profits with the state, as tribes elsewhere in the country must. That deal cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars, but reaped millions in political contributions to her campaign and the Washington Democratic party.
But, even if the unthinkable occurs and the predicted deficit does appear, she’s already chosen her scapegoats – Dino Rossi and George Bush.

It’s Dino Rossi’s fault because when he was Chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, he and Gregoire’s predecessor, Gary Locke, closed a looming deficit by trimming spending. But, while the handouts were withdrawn the hands were still out when Gregoire took office.

“What I got was past-due bills — bills that were not paid by the previous budget, that came due,” Gregoire complained.

In other words, all those special interest groups who paid for the recounts that eventually put her in office wanted their payback. And they got it. And like the tribes, they’ve shown their gratitude by opening their checkbooks for her.

I’m more than a little curious about that visit to the bar where she had her séance with other flat Earth types who choose to live in worlds of their own creation. I have no doubt that she spends as much time as possible in the fantasy land where the only deficits are those that can be blamed on others. And, I’d like to know what it was that Ms Gregoire was drinking so liberally in that bar. Kool Aid perhaps?

Community Organizers Are Pissed At Sarah Palin

Community organizers across America, taken aback by a series of attacks from Republican leaders at the GOP convention in St. Paul, came together today to defend their work organizing Americans who have been left behind by unemployment, lack of health insurance and the national housing crisis. The organizers demanded an apology from Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for her statement that community organizers have no “actual responsibilities” and launched a web site, http://organizersfightback.wordpress.com, to defend themselves against Republican attacks.

No doubt Sarah is quaking in her mukluks.

Biden Returns To The Fold On Drilling

It's back to tire pressure gauges for the Democratic ticket.

Barack Obama didn’t take running mate Joe Biden to the woodshed for his remarks Monday on offshore drilling, which broke from Obama’s strong reservations to it. But Biden on Wednesday nonetheless offered a different opinion: “I’m against it.”

Biden flatly told voters this afternoon that he opposes offshore drilling for oil and gas and lambasted companies for failing to tap many coastal sites they have already leased from the federal government.

“Let’s say it makes sense to drill,” he said.

“No!” the audience replied.

“It doesn’t, I’m against it. But let’s say it makes sense,” Biden continued. “However, I want to remind you of one thing — that oil off the Continental Shelf… Guess who owns that oil? You do. It is federal property owned by all the American people. It is not Exxon Mobile’s property. It is not ARCO’s property.”

Biden also reminded the crowd that their state holds one of the most highly coveted areas for oil, off Florida’s northwest shore in the Gulf of Mexico. Biden said companies are holding more than 72,000 leases and are capable of producing 50 million barrels of oil, but “they are not pumping. Why do you think?”

Biden stayed perfectly on message — Obama’s message. He pulled proposals to develop alternative energy sources directly from the Obama energy plan. He also said the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which holds more than 700 million barrels of oil, should be emptied into the retail market to lower gas prices. As a cost savings, he said, the reserve should be replaced with heavier oil, which is less expensive than current inventory of lighter, sweet crude.

“When Bill Clinton did that it, it drove down the price of oil and gasoline at the pump 18.7% just be releasing it. Why won’t they do it?”

On Labor Day, however, Biden expressed his thoughts quite differently. “I’m not opposed to drilling,” Biden said. He would only support drilling measures if Republican, who support offshore drilling assured their support for ending exports of U.S. oil; reducing the price of oil produced by U.S. companies below that of foreign oil; and increasing royalties that the U.S. government charges to drill.

Global warming strikes again.

Excited villagers pelted each other with snowballs while some ate pieces of the icy sheet that formed over an entire hillside.

"We thought a big white sheet had been spread, so we decided to come and see for ourselves. We thought that it was Jesus who had come back," one villager told reporters.

Kenya's Meteorological Department said Tuesday's storm was caused by the convergence of cold air currents from the Indian Ocean and warm air currents from the Congo.

"The hailstones falling on the ground joined together to form expansive sheets of ice or snow flakes occupying a large area, 30 acres," a statement by the meteorologists said.

More than 12 hours after the storm, the forested hillside was still white despite the hot tropical sun.

So far as I could determine, CNN deemed Britol Palin's pregnancy even more important than the disappointing Hurricane Gustav.

Meanwhile, if anybody's family needs investigation, it's Joe Biden's. It seems that the financial giant MBNA was fattening Hunter Biden's bank accounts at the same time that Joe Biden was helping push through a bankruptcy reform sought my MBNA, but widely opposed by Democrats.

When Sen. Joe Biden's son Hunter needed investors to help buy a New York-based hedge fund, the first financier to step forward was a Chicago lobbying firm and one of the senator's top campaign contributors.

After the first attempt to buy the fund soured, one of Joe Biden's top advisers, who co-owns a lobbying and communications firm, jumped in to provide public relations help, and was later identified in court papers as a new investor.

Both deals came to light only after one of the parties -- who describes himself as a longtime acquaintance of the Bidens -- filed a fraud lawsuit against Hunter and James Biden, the senator's younger brother and a partner in the hedge fund.

The case, still working its way through New York's courts, illustrates an often-mentioned vulnerability of Joe Biden after 36 years in the Senate: his ties with Washington lobbyists, including those of his son Hunter.

Democrats were hoping to avoid Republican attacks and insider dealings when they chose the Delaware Democrat to join presidential hopeful Barack Obama and his message of political change.

But the legal dispute has offered inside glimpses of the deals, including revelations that a corporate counsel working for the Hunter Biden-led venture was awaiting sentencing on a federal money-laundering charge, and allegations of drug abuse by one hedge fund's senior officers and prior owners.
