Barack Hussein Obama Channels Jimmy Carter

Okay, it's official now. Barack Hussein Obama really is the second coming of Jimmy Carter.

Four of the most powerful business leaders in America arrived at the White House one day last month for lunch with President Barack Obama, sitting down in his private dining room just steps from the Oval Office.

But even for powerful CEOs, there’s no such thing as a free lunch: White House staffers collected credit card numbers for each executive and carefully billed them for the cost of the meal
with the president.

The White House defended the unusual move as a way to avoid conflicts of interest. But the Bush administration didn’t charge presidential guests for meals, one former official said, and at least one etiquette expert found the whole thing unseemly – suggesting it was a serious breach of protocol.

“I’m sure they have their political reasons for doing that, but I think it’s not what quote, hospitality, unquote is all about,” said Letitia Baldrige, who headed Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House staff in the early 1960s. “We’ve got to relax about this. To have people to the White House and worry about the price of things is laughable.”

Scott Ott's Examiner Scrappleface: Health plan on ice, Obama pushes grocery reform Opinion Articles - Editorials on Top News Stories | Washington Examiner

His health care plan at least temporarily stymied in Congress, President Obama announced today that he would mount a 27-city tour to promote his new nutrition reform program, dubbed America's Affordable Grocery Choices Act.

With the cost of grocery items skyrocketing, experts say that about 330 million Americans suffer periodic bouts of hunger. Children and the elderly often go for hours between meals.

"America's grocery system is broken," said President Obama, "and the time for reform is now. We can't kick the can down the road, or play political games any longer."

The White House said the president's plan will increase choices and competition, improve the quality of grocery items, share responsibility for grocery bills and protect consumers against waste, fraud and abuse by offering a "Public Option Grocery Store" within five miles of every American home.

"You can still shop at Acme, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Stew Leonard's, Weis Markets, Stater Bros., or Price Chopper," the president said, "But who in their right mind would want to do that when Public Option Groceries has a lot of the same stuff at much lower prices? In many cases, Public Option will offer same-week service on commodity items like corn flakes, toilet paper and salt."

New study debunks global warming claims | Washington Examiner

New study debunks global warming claims | Washington Examiner

Quite simply, the "Influence" study demolishes the claims of the IPCC. Conducted by two scientists from Australia and one from New Zealand, the peer-reviewed paper assessed the influence of the Southern Oscillation Index, (which manifests north of the Equator as El Nino), on global temperature variation. At least 81 percent of the variance in global temperatures is explained by the Southern Oscillation Index, according to the study. The study findings were recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. In view of these findings, the Senate should, at the very least, put cap-and-trade on hold, pending congressional hearings in September at which the Influence study authors and IPCC proponents can argue their cases. Then senators should be better able to make defensible decisions on whether it makes sense to impose radical new controls on the production and consumption of the energy that is the lifeblood of the U.S. economy.

But of course, there's no way that Democrats can tax or regulate the Southern Oscillation, so this study will not influence Democrat decision making.

So Much Attention To The LEGAL Firing Of US Attorneys

And so little attention to Barack Obama's ILLEGAL firing of inspectors general.

The Washington Post reveals that Karl Rove had more input into the prosecutors firings that previously known.

Political adviser Karl Rove and other high-ranking figures in the Bush White House played a greater role than previously understood in the firing of federal prosecutors almost three years ago, according to e-mails obtained by The Washington Post, in a scandal that led to mass Justice Department resignations and an ongoing criminal probe.

By the way, these prosecutors serve at the president's pleasure. He can legally fire them at any time for any reason - even if he doesn't like the way they part their hair. Bill Clinton fired scores of prosecutors and the MSM didn't raise even the slightest fuss.

Obama's firing of inspectors general, is obviously illegal. Too bad that the Washington Post and the New York Time and CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN etc are so incurious about that.

After seven weeks of trying, investigators looking into President Barack Obama’s abrupt firing of AmeriCorps Inspector General Gerald Walpin are still unable to answer the most basic question of the whole affair: Why did the president do it?

They know the reasons the White House has given: That the 77-year-old Walpin was addled and not up to the job, that he had too many conflicts with the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees AmeriCorps, that his office had once distributed a parody newsletter that contained an allegedly sexist remark.

They know all that. But they also know that AmeriCorps is one of Obama’s favorite federal programs. They know that AmeriCorps gave an $800,000-plus grant to Kevin Johnson, the mayor of Sacramento, Calif., who just happens to be an influential friend and supporter of the president. They know that Walpin investigated Johnson’s misuse of that federal money. They know that as a result of Walpin’s probe, Johnson was suspended from receiving any new federal grants, a fact that caused controversy in Sacramento when leaders realized it could prevent the city from receiving millions in federal stimulus money. They know that, amid the local uproar over the Johnson affair, the acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento, Lawrence Brown, made a deal to let Johnson off the hook, and then took the unusual step of denouncing Walpin. They know that Walpin vigorously objected to Johnson’s getting off easy. And they know that after Walpin protested, the president fired him.

All Clinton Offered Lewinsky Was A Job At CNN

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi offered his tramp a seat in the European Parliament.

He didn’t pay me, but he promised to send me two people to take care of a problem I had with planning permission which was blocking a building project. To me that was equal to earning €2,000 extra. That project was really close to my heart and he understood that, so I was satisfied. But that is not what happened. Instead he offered me a seat in the European Parliament.

Makes Bill Clinton seem tight fisted.

John Fund of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page passed along to him a nugget he came across on page 4,293 of Linda Tripp's grand jury testimony.

Here’s the relevant excerpt:
Q: Did Monica Lewinsky and the President discuss the possibility of other jobs, particularly in the media?

A: Yes. The President suggested when he wanted a list of -- a wish list of where she wanted to go -- and she had vague ideas, but nothing specific enough to allow him to have a specific clear idea, they talked about networks. And he instantly said that someone who would do anything he asked was someone named -- I think his first name is Richard, but Kaplan at CNN, who had recently I believe gone from ABC to CNN who he said was a very, very close friend and was heading up CNN in Atlanta. He could make that happen with a snap of his fingers.

Reset!

Biden, just back from a trip to Georgia and the Ukraine, said that Russian leaders are "clinging to something in the past," and dismissed Russia's claim to a sphere of influence extending to neighboring countries. “It’s a very difficult thing to deal with, loss of empire,” said Biden.

Sergei Prikhodko, the chief foreign policy adviser to President Medvedev, shot back: “The question is: who is shaping the U.S. foreign policy, the president or respectable members of his team?”

It wasn't immediately clear if Biden's aggressive, and extended, comments represented a broader change of U.S. tone or policy, and the White House hasn't offered any comment on the interview.

Who Should Live And Who Should Die And Who Should Never Have Been Born In The First Place?

When the lefties are out of power, they are usually irritating, although sometimes they can be entertaining as well. But when lefties are in power, that’s when they get creepy. And judging by some of the attitudes that have effervesced to the surface lately, the left has grown quite inebriated with the unfettered power it now wields. And because the left does not have to fear an adversarial press, it has discarded its warm, fuzzy facade and allowed its true face to show.

During his ABC produced health care infomercial, Obama was told the story about a 100 year old woman whose life was extended for at least 5 years (so far) by a pacemaker. When asked if his vision for socialized medicine would deny such treatment to the elderly, he answered that maybe the old lady should have just contented herself with a painkiller instead and saved the health care system some money. Rather than judge the woman’s spirit, he would assign the task of deciding who lives or dies to the accounting department. If judging when life begins is above his pay grade, then deciding when it should end is below him. Have we ever had a president, or even a prominent politician come right out and say that the elderly should be denied healthcare to save money for the young?

As he well knows, Medicare is expensive. End of life care accounts for about three-quarters of Medicare’s costs. The Left has never shown much interest in trimming government spending, except when it comes to defense budgets. But Medicare spending prolongs the lives of voters who generally vote against Democrats. As Los Angeles Times columnist Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times remarked: “A majority of young people still approve of Obama's job performance, but a majority of seniors over 64 now don't (54%). Maybe they'll die before the next election.”

So the Left has two reasons to accelerate death among the old. A majority opposes him right now and history shows that the dead cast their votes almost unanimously for Democrats. And Obama has made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that he means to hasten them on that path.

Not creepy enough? Then read on. You didn’t read this in your newspaper, or in Time or Newsweek. And you won’t see it on CNN or your network news. But Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg seemed to come down firmly on the side of eugenics. During an interview with the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Justice Ginsburg expressed her disappointment with the outcome of Roe versus Wade legalization of abortion. In particular she was troubled that federal tax money was not paying for abortions: “Frankly I had thought that at the time (Roe vs. Wade]) was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of.”

Precisely which demographic was it that Ginsburg didn’t want too many of? Might these be the “undesirable social elements” that Pullman’s lefties believed that Wal-Mart would attract into our community? The New York Times’ interviewer didn’t find Ginsburg’s lament worthy of a follow up question and the rest of the mainstream media seems no more curious. Had a prominent conservative lamented the excessive fecundity of social undesirables, would the Times have been more curious?

Of course, the founding mother of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, made no secret of whose babies she wished to see aborted – African Americans.

I wonder what Justice Ginsburg thinks about forced abortions? How about forced sterilizations? Does she believe that drinking water should be spiked with infertility drugs?

It’s worth asking this question because Dr. John Holdren, Barack Obama’s new director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, co-authored a book that advocated all those policies and more. His co-author for the book “Ecoscience” was the thoroughly discredited Paul Erlich, best known for an unbroken string of mistaken eco-alarmist predictions.

If you have any problems with this, be afraid. Be very afraid. Representative Alcee Hastings (D-Florida), the impeached former Florida judge whom Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi tried to install as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, attached an amendment to the defense authorization bill that would give Attorney General Eric Holder sole discretionary authority to label opponents of government policy as hate groups or domestic terrorists.

Wasn’t dissent the highest form of patriotism?

No word on how this news will affect Barack Obama or Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's thinking.

How Democrats Fight Terror

By betraying our own warriors.

Today, many in Congress are again saying they are outraged at the possibility of "targeted killings" of al Qaeda leaders by U.S. intelligence operatives. Why this should be so is puzzling. America's military forces have properly and legitimately been hard at work killing terrorists and destroying their capabilities since the murderous attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Obviously, however, in the war on terror, al Qaeda leaders do not conveniently dispose themselves on military battlefields, so the intelligence community's clandestine efforts appear perfectly suited to the "war in the shadows" that terrorists typically employ very well. Surely the terrorists care little whether they are being killed by CIA agents disguised as peasants or by grunts in camouflage uniforms and dirty combat boots.

Kind of reminds me of how Democrats wanted to win the Iraq war - by surrendering.

Obama Lied

Healthcare died.

President Barack Obama's assertion Wednesday that government will stay out of health care decisions in an overhauled system is hard to square with the proposals coming out of Congress and with his own rhetoric.

Even now, nearly half the costs of health care in the U.S. are paid for by government at all levels. Federal authority would only grow under any proposal in play.

A look at some of Obama's claims in his prime-time news conference:

OBAMA: "We already have rough agreement" on some aspects of what a health care overhaul should involve, and one is: "It will keep government out of health care decisions, giving you the option to keep your insurance if you're happy with it."

THE FACTS: In House legislation, a commission appointed by the government would determine what is and isn't covered by insurance plans offered in a new purchasing pool, including a plan sponsored by the government. The bill also holds out the possibility that, over time, those standards could be imposed on all private insurance plans, not just the ones in the pool.

Indeed, Obama went on to lay out other principles of reform that plainly show the government making key decisions in health care. He said insurance companies would be barred from dropping coverage when someone gets too sick, limits would be set on out-of-pocket expenses, and preventive care such as checkups and mammograms would be covered.

It's true that people would not be forced to give up a private plan and go with a public one. The question is whether all of those private plans would still be in place if the government entered the marketplace in a bigger way.

OBAMA: "I have also pledged that health insurance reform will not add to our deficit over the next decade, and I mean it."

THE FACTS: The president has said repeatedly that he wants "deficit-neutral" health care legislation, meaning that every dollar increase in cost is met with a dollar of new revenue or a dollar of savings. But some things are more neutral than others. White House Budget Director Peter Orszag told reporters this week that the promise does not apply to proposed spending of about $245 billion over the next decade to increase fees for doctors serving Medicare patients...

OBAMA: "You haven't seen me out there blaming the Republicans."

THE FACTS: Obama did so in his opening statement, saying, "I've heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it's better politics to 'go for the kill.' Another Republican senator said that defeating health reform is about 'breaking' me."

Still No Inspector General News At The New York Times

The New York Times has published precisely one article about Barack Obama's illegal firing of Americorps inspector general Gerald Walpin. And that article was only to repeat on Obama's since discredited excuse for breaking the law to serve a friend and political ally.

Meanwhile, the story keeps evolving in Obama's disfavor.

The inspector general fired by President Obama after concluding that a California project backed by a Democratic mayor misused at least part of $847,673 in federal grants said Tuesday he is fighting back to protect the integrity and independence of all government watchdogs.

"For a second I was thinking, 'Why do I need all of this?' I'll just resign and go back to my good legal practice in New York," Gerald Walpin told The Washington Times' "America's Morning News" radio show Tuesday.

"But I would then be part of the apparatus that is totally torpedoing the inspectors general," Mr. Walpin said. "The watchdog would not really be a watchdog. He'd just be afraid of his shadow."

Another Black Thursday For Obamacare?

Another dreaded Thursday will pass without socialized medicine.

What we're seeing is the people speaking through their politicians. Obama and many Democrats assumed that the financial crisis would predispose most Americans to favor a larger and much more expensive government than we have ever had before.

Plausible hope for change, perhaps, but polling shows it hasn't happened. The prospect of huge federal deficits extending out as far as the eye can see is not appealing to most voters. The prospect of having the health care sector of the economy designed by the people who gave us the $787 billion stimulus package is even less appetizing.

Healthcare: The "Reinvention" Of 155% Of The Economy

What credentials do the Democrats have?

Politicians and bureaucrats clearly have no idea how complicated markets are. Every day people make countless tradeoffs, in all areas of life, based on subjective value judgments and personal information as they delicately balance their interests, needs and wants. Who is in a better position than they to tailor those choices to best serve their purposes? Yet the politicians believe they can plan the medical market the way you plan a birthday party.

Leave aside how much power the state would have to exercise over us to run the medical system. Suffice it say that if government attempts to control our total medical spending, sooner or later, it will have to control us.

Have any of them even run a lemonade stand?

Obama Fails Even His Own Smallest Test

Three months ago, Barack Obama very dramatically announced that he was asking his cabinet to cut their operations by a whole $100 million. The mainstream media dutifully reported these as "major" budget cuts even though $100 million would barely cover one day's debt service on Obama's $787 billion porkulus bill. Nevertheless, even this puny goal has been missed.

The deadline came -- and went -- without a report from the White House on whether or not that promise was fulfilled.

Asked about the spending cuts, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday that information still was being compiled.

"Those are being reviewed now, and we'll release something in the coming days," Gibbs told the daily White House briefing.

At time the challenge was announced, critics said $100 million in savings was a small amount on the context of the federal budget.

"Any amount of savings is obviously welcome," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said in April. "But [$100 million is] about the average amount we'll spend every single day just covering the interest on the stimulus package that we passed earlier this year."

In April, Gibbs insisted that ordinary Americans nevertheless would appreciate the savings effort.

Post Racial Obama Racism

If you think that Obamacare is about healthcare, then explain to me why it contains language forcing racial preferences on medical schools.

The bill includes racial preferences. Under the Democrats' health care bill, if a medical school wants to increase its chances of receiving many different kinds of grants and contracts from the federal government, it should have a demonstrated record of training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups. This is because the Democrats' health care bill requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to give preference to the entities that have demonstrated such a record in the awarding of these contracts to medical schools and other institutions.

Back in 1993, Hillarycare had this same kind of crap in it. In fact, Hillarycare contained specific racial quotas for each medical specialty.

Obama To Revitalize US Manufacturing?

Now this is ironic. Naturally, the irony is lost on the New York Times.

The United States ranks behind every industrial nation except France in the percentage of overall economic activity devoted to manufacturing — 13.9 percent, the World Bank reports, down 4 percentage points in a decade. The 19-month-old recession has contributed noticeably to this decline. Industrial production has fallen 17.3 percent, the sharpest drop during a recession since the 1930s.

So far, however, Mr. Obama’s administration has not come up with a formal plan to address the rapid decline. Instead, it has pursued ad hoc initiatives — bailing out General Motors and Chrysler, for example, and pushing green energy by supporting the manufacture of items like wind turbines and solar panels.

Considering that the decline in manufacturing is directly attributable to overtaxation, overregulation and trade unions, how in the world is Obama going to reverse the decline? The foundation of his ideology is to increase taxes, increase regulation and give unions even more power.

Self Defense Legal - Crime Rate Down.

Experts are puzzled that Washington, DC's crime rate has plummeted.

Violent crime has plummeted in the Washington area and in major cities across the country, a trend criminologists describe as baffling and unexpected.

The District, New York and Los Angeles are on track for fewer killings this year than in any other year in at least four decades. Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and other cities are also seeing notable reductions in homicides.

"Experts did not see this coming at all," said Andrew Karmen, a criminologist and professor of sociology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

What has changed, and why can't experts consider this?

“WASHINGTON will become a safer place to live and work, thanks to yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling against DC’s absolute ban on handguns. The court ruled that the Second Amendment’s guarantee of the right to bear arms is an individual right, striking down one of the nation’s toughest anti-gun laws. As someone who lived in DC when it imposed its ban 32 years ago, I say it’s about time.”

The Rehabilitation Of Jimmy Carter

Many people regard Jimmy Carter as the worst president in living memory, if not all time. Personally, I give that distinction to Lyndon Johnson, but considering that the Obama presidency has taken on the appearance of Jimmy Carter's on fast forward, it's not surprising that Democrats are trying to rewrite history.

More than a few observers have pointed out that President Obama and the Democrats in Congress seem determined to repeat the errors of the 1970s by returning to inflationary spending, tax increases, auto company bailouts and cuts to the defense budget while coddling dictators who hate America.

So it was inevitable that this recycling effort would get around to attempting the most brazen rehabilitation of all: Jimmy Carter was a visionary president! If only we had listened to him.

It was 30 years ago this month that Mr. Carter reached the nadir of his presidency with his famous "malaise" speech in which he criticized the American people for their materialism and "crisis of confidence." To be fair, Mr. Carter never used the word malaise in his speech (an aide used "malaise" in characterizing the speech to the media the next day), but the label stuck because it so accurately conveyed the substance of his message. Having run for president in 1976 on a slogan of giving us "a government as good as the people," Mr. Carter essentially was saying the people were no good.

Today the malaise speech is being revived as a totem of Mr. Carter's unrecognized greatness and profundity.

At least this isn't as bad as the New York Times' attempt to rehabilitate Adolf Hitler's reputation.

Do You Trust Obama To Control Internet Content?

If Barack Hussein Obama has his way, he'll be able to take down any opinions that he doesn't like.

Obama has appointed Cass Sustein to lead his Orwellian-titled “White House Office Of Information And Regulatory Affairs.” Cass Sustein thinks that the government should exert more control over what appears on blogs and such.

Perhaps most disturbing is Mr. Sunstein’s vision for the future of web content, as he argues for a so-called “notice and take down” law. Under this provision, those who operate websites - - The Washington Post, radio stations, private bloggers, and perhaps even you, yourself -we would all be required “take down falsehoods upon notice” from the U.S. government.

Obama: Destoying What God Loves

A prolific liar, killer and murderer....

Labels: , ,

Car Wash Nazis And Boiled Frogs

What is the world coming to? Just this last Saturday, I saw a gang of teenaged hooligans engaged in an immoral conspiracy, flagrantly flouting the environmental sensibilities of the great state of Washington. Right there, in full view of decent citizens, the local constabulary and God Almighty, these desperados were washing cars on a black top parking lot in a manner that runs afoul of Washington State water quality regulations.

I know. I know. I should have chosen my words more carefully. I should have prepared my readers for the shock. I probably should have started with one of those disclaimers warning my readers that this column contains adult content and strong language. Rated M for mature and all that. And I hope that no ladies suffered a fainting spell when they read the preceding paragraph. If they did, will the nearest strong-shouldered manly gentleman please extend to them my sincerest apologies when they revive.

It may be difficult to read, but it’s true. There the scofflaws were, dressed in cutoffs and swimming trunks, armed with garden hoses, buckets, sponges, towels and chamois, soliciting passersby to collaborate in their crime. I didn’t see it happen, but undoubtedly mothers were covering their young children’s eyes as they drove past, lest those children’s psyches suffer some irreparable damage. Washing cars is the kind of thing that adults have to spell out when children are in range of hearing.

If you didn’t already know, and if my neighbors are a representative sample, many of you don’t, it is now unacceptable in the state of Washington to wash cars on an impermeable surface, such as a grocery store parking lot, or even your own driveway. What the state now expects you to do is to wash your car on gravel or your own lawn.

And while car washing is not yet legally forbidden, it’s just a matter of time. The state is imposing on local governments the obligation to control runoff into streams. If local jurisdictions are found in violation of state regulations, then they’ll have to take action to bring themselves into compliance. And that’s going to mean issuing tickets.

The theory at work here is that washing cars generates a soapy runoff that is unhealthy for aquatic life. Washing your body or your clothes is okay (unless you live in Spokane) because that water is first run through a sewage treatment plant. I mention Spokane because phosphate-containing detergents are now verboten there. This has forced Spokanites who actually want clean clothes and clean dishes to smuggle phosphate-containing detergents from across the Idaho border. Washing your car in an unapproved manner will drain into waterways, supposedly poisoning fish.

So, will car wash brown shirts be patrolling the streets looking for offenders to place in handcuffs? Well, no, not in the next few days anyway.

Asked if he expected to see car wash police patrolling the streets of Seattle, Doug Navetski, of King County’s water quality division answered, “No. We'll do public education.”

Public education, huh? So, does that mean that, if I pull my own car out of the garage, park it in my driveway, stretch out my hose, add some soap to a bucket of water and start washing it in my driveway, the worst that can happen to me is that some car wash Nazi will come up and educate me? And what if, after receiving my education, I elect to tell the educator to go, uh, find some better use for his time, will he humbly slink away and trouble me no more? That might happen the first time, but I doubt that we can expect such humility to endure.

I feel like that legendary frog who is about to be boiled. For those of you unfamiliar with the fable, the proper way to boil a frog is to put him in cool water and raise the heat gradually. If you try to put him in hot water, he’ll fight like crazy. It’s better to take your time.

We are so much less free today than we were when I was growing up. For example, in those days, we could do maintenance on our own cars. Today’s shade tree mechanic is likely to run afoul of federal law. And soon, we won’t even be allowed to wash our own cars.

Not even Orwell foresaw this.

EXCLUSIVE: Siemens risks losses due to Iran ties - Washington Times

Siemens and Nokia lent considerable assistance to the Iranian government in tracking down pro-democracy protesters and there have been calls for a boycott of those firms. It may be starting already.

Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian human rights lawyer and winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, told The Washington Times Thursday that she is urging Los Angeles County not to award Siemens the contract. She also urged Californians to write letters to their local representatives to boycott Siemens.

"I don't think the City of Los Angeles should award contracts to companies such as Nokia or Siemens who participate in the violation of basic human rights including the right to free speech and privacy," she wrote in an e-mail. "Just as it is the duty of governments to uphold values and contracts honoring universal human rights, it is as important for companies and large corporations to do the same."

Saying that Nokia and Siemens participated in censorship in Iran, she added, "If such companies are faced with consequences that effect their 'bottom line' they will be less enticed to enter in to business agreements with any government attempting to restrict the basic human rights of their people."

Barack Obama's "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"

Guess what? The $787 billion porkulus bill wasn't meant to stimulate the economy after all.

According to ABC News:
Turns out the $787 billion "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act" (AARA) was not designed for full economic recovery, but rather to "stabilize" the downturn. That's the word from White House officials today, who held off-camera briefings with reporters on how the AARA is working so far.

"This legislation was designed to cushion the downturn," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. "That's why we have always talked about this as one function of economic recovery."

When pressed about the change in terminology, Gibbs said he was not trying to temper expectations after the fact. "I can probably find 15 or 20 occasions when I said this in the lead up," Gibbs said, explaining that he had always defined the AARA as part of a "multi-legged stool."

Senior Economic Adviser Jared Bernstein said that the economy is improving -- or at least getting "less bad." And he said, that's a good thing.

"It's always challenging to explain that things getting less bad is actually a necessary path on the way to them being good, but that's the truth," Bernstein said. "The trends have to go recession, stabilization, recovery. Negative, less negative, positive."

Karl Rove has something to say about this.

So what's a president to do when the promises he made about his economic stimulus program fail to materialize? If you're Barack Obama, you redefine your goals and act as if America won't remember what you said originally. That's a neat trick if you can get away with it, but Mr. Obama won't. His words are a matter of public record and he will be held to them.

When it came to the stimulus package, the president and his administration promised, in the words of National Economic Director Larry Summers, "You'll see the effects begin almost immediately." Now it's clear that those promised jobs and growth haven't materialized.

So Mr. Obama is attempting to lower expectations retroactively, saying in an op-ed in Sunday's Washington Post that his stimulus "was, from the start, a two-year program." That is misleading. Mr. Obama never said if his stimulus were passed things might still get significantly worse in the following year.

Nancy Pelosi Is A Heavy Handed Despot

Along with being a hypocrite and a liar.

In their zeal to protect their members from politically hazardous votes on issues such as gay marriage and gun control, Democrats running the House of Representatives are taking extraordinary steps to muzzle Republicans in this summer's debates on spending bills.

On Thursday, for example, Republicans had hoped to force debates on abortion, school vouchers and medical marijuana, as well as gay marriage and gun control, as part of House consideration of the federal government's contribution to the District of Columbia's city budget.

This isn't quite what Nancy Pelosi promised would happen in 2006.

"The American people called for greater civility in how Congress conducts its work, and Democrats pledge to conduct our work with civility and bipartisanship, and to act in partnership - not partisanship - with the president and Republicans in Congress."

If that was what Americans voted for, then Pelosi certainly isn't giving it to them.

Obamacare Would Devastate The Economy

So says the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

Instead of saving the federal government from fiscal catastrophe, the health reform measures being drafted by congressional Democrats would worsen an already bleak budget outlook, increasing deficit projections and driving the nation more deeply into debt, the director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said this morning.

Under questioning by members of the Senate Budget Committee, CBO director Douglas Elmendorf said bills crafted by House leaders and the Senate health committee do not propose "the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a signficant amount."

"On the contrary," Elmendorf said, "the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility for health care costs."

Though President Obama and Democratic leaders have said repeatedly that reining in the skyrocketing growth in spending on giovernment health programs such as Medicaid and Medicare is their top priority, the reform measures put forth so far would not fulfill their pledge to "bend the cost curve" downward, Elmendorf said. Instead, he said, "The curve is being raised."

Wrong again.

Fetuses found to have memories - Washington Times

The unborn have memories, according to medical researchers who used sound and vibration stimulation, combined with sonography, to reveal that the human fetus displays short-term memory from at least 30 weeks gestation - or about two months before they are born.

"In addition, results indicated that 34-week-old fetuses are able to store information and retrieve it four weeks later," said the research, which was released Wednesday.

This has to be disconcerting news, including those who favor abortion as a means of reducing the number of undesirables.

Saving Nancy Pelosi

It's now quite clear that the kerfuffle regarding the CIA's keeping an Al Qaida assassination program secret from Congress was manufactured to give Nancy Pelosi cover.

Two U.S. officials with detailed knowledge of current CIA operations said the agency presented Panetta last month with new plans for moving forward with training for potential members of the assassination teams -- activities that would have involved "crossing international boundaries," in the words of a former counterterrorism official briefed on the matter.

"When a CIA unit brought the program to Panetta's attention, it came with a recommendation to brief Congress since there was some thought being given to moving toward a somewhat more operational phase -- that is, a little training," said an intelligence official with direct knowledge of the events.

In other words, it was just something that was being considered and had never been operational, or particularly close to operational. When the CIA started thinking more seriously about it, they decided that it was time to tell Congress. And Panetta exploited that to affect outrage and bolster Pelosi's irresponsible claim that the CIA illegally withholds information from Congress all the time.

More On Obama's "Science Czar"

Not only did John Holdren advocate forced abortion, forced sterilization and, in some cases, forced marriages, he also advocated punishing couples who had too many children.

"As United States taxpayers know, income tax laws have long implicitly encouraged marriage and childbearing...Such a pronatalist bias of course is no longer appropriate. In countries that are affluent enough for the majority of citizens to pay taxes, tax laws could be adjusted to favor (instead of penalize) single people, working wives, and small families. Other tax measures might also include high marriage fees, taxes on luxury baby goods and toys, and removal of family allowances where they exist. Other possibilities include the limitation of maternal or educational benefits to two children per family."

Holdren notes that some of these proposals “have the potential disadvantage of heavily penalizing children (and in the long run society as well).” This is not a disqualifier, though, as long as the proposals are “carefully adjusted to avoid denying at least minimum care for poor families, regardless of the number of children they may have.” Even here, the objection is practical, not ethical. It's fine to level stiff penalties against those who choose families and children, but not to the point that this policy exacerbates the original problem (unwanted children, living in squalor) that population control purports to combat.

Dissent

Is it still the highest form of patriotism? Not according to liberals.

Still, the administration decided that mere words were insufficient – the opposition had to be officially demonized in writing. Enter a threat assessment report released by the Obama Administration warning, with virtually zero evidence, that “right-wing extremism” in the form of opposition to illegal immigration, abortion, expanded social programs, expanded government, gun control, and gay marriage has the potential to translate into terrorism.

In other words, if you’re conservative, you are potentially a terrorist. Never have left-wing groups been attacked with such specificity even by the same Bush Administration that we have been instructed is the root of all partisanship, authoritarianism and pure evil.

Indeed the terrorism theme is one enthusiastically embraced by the Obama team. Matthew Feldman, an attorney on the President’s Auto Task Force, has referred to an opposing attorney in the Chrysler restructuring as a “terrorist” after the latter insisted on the government’s compliance with the law.

Sometimes more subtle words will do the job. When Dick Cheney criticized Obama over interrogation of terrorism suspects, Obama appointee and CIA director Leon Panetta voraciously jumped to his boss’s defense: “When you read behind it, it’s almost as if (Cheney is) wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point.” In an almost purposeful attempt to make us chuckle at the astonishing irony, Panetta added that Cheney was playing “dangerous politics.”

Most Obama supporters are so far giving the Czar of Czars a free pass. While a 2006 poll showed that a majority of Democrats did not want Bush to succeed, the Democratic leadership is now telling us that even questioning authority is dangerous, unpatriotic and even terroristic.

And the Obamaistas are satisfied with simply demonizing their critics. They want to criminalize them too.

[I]n the latest bizarre twist, legislation quietly making its way through Congress would give the White House power to categorize political opponents as hate groups and even send Americans to detention centers on abandoned military bases.

Another Reason Why Democrats Want To Ram Healthcare Reform Through

As Steny Hoyer said, if congressmen actually read the bill, then nobody would vote for it. But you and I are the people who they really want to hide it from. Here's why.

Obama’s health care proposal is, in effect, the repeal of the Medicare program as we know it. The elderly will go from being the group with the most access to free medical care to the one with the least access. Indeed, the principal impact of the Obama health care program will be to reduce sharply the medical services the elderly can use. No longer will their every medical need be met, their every medication prescribed, their every need to improve their quality of life answered.

Barack Obama's Perilous Economic Predictions

As bad as the deficit is and as bad as Obama says that it's going to be, economists are warning that Obama is much too optimistic.

President Barack Obama’s economic forecasts for long-term growth are too optimistic, many economists warn, a miscalculation that would mean budget deficits will be much higher than the administration is now acknowledging.

The White House will be forced to confront the disconnect between its original, upbeat predictions and the mainstream consensus about how the economy is likely to perform in a new budget forecast to be unveiled next month.

Why They Hate Her

Sarah Palin cuts cap and trade off at the knees.

There is no denying that as the world becomes more industrialized, we need to reform our energy policy and become less dependent on foreign energy sources. But the answer doesn't lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive! Those who understand the issue know we can meet our energy needs and environmental challenges without destroying America's economy.

Job losses are so certain under this new cap-and-tax plan that it includes a provision accommodating newly unemployed workers from the resulting dried-up energy sector, to the tune of $4.2 billion over eight years. So much for creating jobs.

In addition to immediately increasing unemployment in the energy sector, even more American jobs will be threatened by the rising cost of doing business under the cap-and-tax plan. For example, the cost of farming will certainly increase, driving down farm incomes while driving up grocery prices. The costs of manufacturing, warehousing and transportation will also increase.

The ironic beauty in this plan? Soon, even the most ardent liberal will understand supply-side economics.

Union Goon Assumes Duties As Obama's Car Czar

The unions made General Motors and Chrysler what they are today, so why not?

After just five months on the job, President Obama's "Car Czar," Steven Rattner, is quitting. His replacement, a six-figure official with the Steelworkers' Union named Ron Bloom, is already waiting in the wings. It sounds like a firing, but if the GM and Chrysler deals turn out poorly, Rattner will probably be happy he's already gone.

The Economy Is Even Worse Than You're Being Told

Mort Zuckerman tells the tale that the mainstream media won't.

The cumulative job losses over the last six months have been greater than for any other half year period since World War II, including the military demobilization after the war. The job losses are also now equal to the net job gains over the previous nine years, making this the only recession since the Great Depression to wipe out all job growth from the previous expansion.

When the economy was roaring under Bush, the mainstream media emphasized every tiny little inconvenience and did such a good job of it that a plurality of Americans believed that the US was in a recession even when the economy was white hot.

"We must support strong and sustainable democratic governments." "America can also do more to promote trade and investment." Obama Advocates Reaganomics

For Ghana.

No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves — (applause) — or if police — if police can be bought off by drug traffickers. (Applause.) No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20 percent off the top — (applause) — or the head of the Port Authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery. (Applause.) That is not democracy, that is tyranny, even if occasionally you sprinkle an election in there.

As Glenn Reynolds notes: "American businessmen, meanwhile, are exclaiming, only twenty percent?"

Journalism: The Real Loser In The 2008 Election

Carl Cannon casts a skeptical eye on his own profession and doesn't like what he sees.

In the 2008 election, we took sides, straight and simple, particularly with regard to the vice presidential race. I don't know that we played a decisive role in that campaign, and I'm not saying the better side lost. What I am saying is that we simply didn't hold Joe Biden to the same standard as Sarah Palin, and for me, the real loser in this sordid tale is my chosen profession.

And, Carl Canon gets to a point that I've been making for years. He acknowledges that newsrooms are liberal and that liberalism seeps into the news articles they produce. And this liberalism is contributing to the demise of newspapers.

If being "liberal" now meant sympathy for the Democratic Party, and being conservative implied sympathy for Republicans, all those liberal newsrooms across the country were gradually going to alienate themselves from about half their readers.

Read it all the way to the end. He chronicles newspaper history, then tells how the pretense of objectivity was abandoned last year and how the press was particularly venomous in its treatment of Sarah Palin.

Remember her callous decision as governor to cut Alaska's special education budget by 62 percent? After receiving emails to that effect, CNN's Soledad O'Brien cited the figure on-air. Oops. Palin actually tripled the state's spending on special needs kids.
Did you hear the one about her membership in the Alaska Independence Party, which favors secession from the union? That made The New York Times, and it was wrong, too.

Stimulating Your Friends

It pays to be friends with Colorado governor Bill Ritter.

Ritter hired his former law firm, the Washington-based Hogan & Hartson, in a no-bid contract to review stimulus spending, The Denver Post reported Friday. It said the firm was paid $40,000 in stimulus money through June.

Aides to the governor insisted the contract was properly awarded. The state attorney general's office deemed the contract necessary to allow the state to have speedy legal advice about stimulus money. The contract is too small to require competitive bidding.

I can't spend $3000 without putting it out for competitive bid.

This might be clean, but Republicans are required to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Democrats aren't held to so high a standard.

Liberal Humor: Just Downright Mean

Liberals are different from you and me, assuming that you, dear reader are not a liberal. And it’s not just that we vote differently. Our whole outlook is different. These differences occasionally make their way into the popular press when a publicity seeking behavioral scientist conducts a study that judges responses to various stimuli from self-identified liberals or conservatives.

While perusing the paper the other day I saw a headline reporting on just such a story. The headline stated that conservatives are more “squeamish” than liberals. I did not immediately trouble myself with reading the story. Such pseudo-scientific balderdash appears once or twice a year when some academic crank tries to paint conservatism as a sort of mental illness. My wife, however, actually read the article and arrived at a different conclusion than the headline writer.

What the study actually concluded was that conservatives were more easily disgusted by such things as filthy toilet seats. The bias was in the journalism and not the research itself. The headline could just as easily as read, “Liberals are pigs.”

But, the article did point up the fact that liberals and conservatives are different in ways more fundamental than just party affiliation.

You know this instinctively. When you see a car plastered with bumper stickers, you don’t have to get close enough to read the bumper stickers to know that the driver is a liberal. Conservatives simply do not use their cars to broadcast their views. Doing so is like walking down the street with a powerful boom box loudly playing metal rap. Polite people don’t do it.

Liberals and conservatives also have very different senses of humor. Liberals seem to find entertainment when misery and misfortune befalls someone who fails to conform to their template. Recently comedienne Wanda Sykes was cracking jokes at the White House Correspondents dinner and laid down this knee slapper: “I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight.”

This brought forth a round of guffaws from most of the assembled, including President Barack Obama.

Sykes is not the first to laugh at substance addiction. Such jokes are sometimes made at the expense of liberals. Here’s one of my favorites: How many Ted Kennedys does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: Just one. He holds the bulb and drinks until the room spins.

I will concede that there is an element of meanness in both jokes. But Sykes’ joke is both unimaginative and humorless. Nevertheless, those gathered, including our president, laughed it up. She also said that she’d like to see Rush Limbaugh’s kidneys fail and inspired another round of hardy har hars.

And wishing death upon a non-conformist is not unique. Fifteen years ago USA Today columnist Julianne Malveaux took aim at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and quipped that she hoped that, “his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early, like many black men do, of heart disease.”

Is there even a trace of humor in that statement, or is it just pure meanness? And I ask, can anyone point to a single incident of a prominent conservative wishing death upon a liberal? Keep in mind that Julianne Malveaux remains a prominent voice of the left.

Not even children are immune from liberal venom. David Letterman famously aroused a few yucks by speculating that Sarah Palin’s 14 year-old daughter might have been “knocked up” by Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. A couple of days later he revised and extended his remarks to claim that he was actually making a crude sexual joke about Palin’s 18 year-old daughter, not her 14 year-old daughter.
That’s so much better.

But is it possible that I found the joke offensive because it was aimed at a conservative? No. When I imagined a similar joke aimed at Barack Obama’s daughters, it still wasn’t funny.

Just last week, humorist Eric Sean Nelson celebrated the news that Sarah Palin was resigning as Alaska governor by cracking retard jokes about Palin’s year old Down’s Syndrome baby. Classy.

And now that the crude and oafish Al Franken has joined the United States Senate, we can expect more such liberal levity. He is, after all the man who humorously fantasized about conservative commentator Bill Bennett getting shot in the head. Such hilarity.

Was this what Michelle Obama meant when she said America was "just downright mean?"
