We Have Bred Monsters...

We Have Bred Monsters...

Dr. Muhammad Talal Al-Rasheed, columnist for the English language daily The Saudi Gazette laments the whirlwind his culture has reaped.

"We have bred monsters. We alone are responsible for it. I have written as much before my personal tragedy and will continue to do so for as long as it takes. We are the problem and not America or the penguins of the North Pole or those who live in caves in Afghanistan. We are it, and those who cannot see this are the ones to blame.

"Castrated as we are, we look to America. Why? Because they went into Iraq and made a difference. Better or worse is another point. Once America has demonstrated its willingness to do something, the moral imperative is that it should not stop at the first station along the road. The majority of us are sick and tired of this carnage and President Bush, wrong on just about everything else, is right on this one. Does he have the (courage) to finish the job? I wonder."

My Son Wants a Handgun

My Son Wants a Handgun

The day before Thanksgiving, my 19-year old son informed me of his intention to purchase a handgun. He believed that he had not just the right, but the responsibility to defend himself. He also said that he planned to acquire a concealed carry permit.
I thought it over and said, "Good idea."
After all, I owned my first handgun when I was about 16. For many years, I slept with it within easy reach when I lived in Cahleeforrnya.
I even agreed with his tastes, although I think it's out of his price range. He wants a Desert Eagle chambered for .50 Action Express.
Glenn Reynolds explains why my son is just part of a shift in attititude.

Who Says Mrs Kucinich Has to be a Woman?

Who Says Mrs Kucinich Has to be a Woman?

Hey, aren't the Democrats the party of diversity? It seems to me that they're being a little closed-minded in their search for a mate for Dennis Kucinich. To be entirely consistent, shouldn't they leave open the possibility that Mrs. Kucinich could be a guy?

Friedman Just Doesn't Understand the Left

Friedman Just Doesn't Understand the Left

Thomas Friedman, bless his naive heart, just doesn't understand the Left. He expresses his distress, in today's column, that the Left is not critical of Baathists and Bin Laden. He would understand them better if he realized that the Left is not really pro-anything. They are simply anti-American, anti-western civilization, anti-anything that makes their neighbors comfortable.

How else could an ideology that, in this country favors gay rights, be sympathetic to the Taliban, which executed homosexuals? The answer is that homosexuality makes most American uncomfortable, so the left favors it. The Taliban is anti-American, so the left favors the Taliban. The Left ironically calls conservatives "Nazis" as it most offensive term of derision, but the Left supports the Baathist resistance in Iraq. Baathists are direct decendents of the Nazi party.

Thomas Friedman and his fellow liberals will have to wean themselves for the support of the anti-American Left if they ever hope to be a significant force in this country. Unfortunately, the Democrat Party embraces the anti-American Left as can be heard in the rhetoric of the party's presidential candidates and their acceptance of millions from George Soros.

Dems vs Republicans, Hillary vs. Bush, Pessimism vs. Optimism

Dems vs Republicans, Hillary vs. Bush, Pessimism vs. Optimism

Clearly trying to undo the damage done by President Bush's Thanksgiving Day visit, Hillary Clinton tried to dampen morale eleveated by the president just two days later.

"Americans are wholeheartedly proud of what you are doing but there are many questions at home about the (Bush) administration's policies."

Permit me to translate: "Don't get your hopes too high. We Democrats are doing all we can to undermine the policies you are all risking your lives for so that hopefully, all your sacrifices will have been in vain."

Terminating Stupidity

Terminating Stupidity

Demonstrating just how beholden to special interests he was and how out of touch with the mainstream he was, one of ex-Caleeforrnya governor Gray Davis last, stupidest acts was to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

The Terminator has inspired the legislature to overturn that law. In fact, the repeal passed 33-0 in the Caleeforrnya Senate.

Can the Democratic Party Really Be So Hateful?

Can the Democratic Party Really Be So Hateful?

Yes, they can. They are so blinded by hatred that they cannot appreciate how they are viewed by mainstream Americans when they say things like this.

"This is a president who has been unwilling to provide his presence to the families who have suffered, but thinks nothing of flying to Baghdad to use the troops there as a prop," said Joe Lockhart, former spokesman for President Clinton.

"The trip highlights how insecure Iraq is and shows how we need to get our allies in to get the American face off the occupation," said Jamal Simmons, a spokesman for Democratic candidate Wesley Clark, a retired Army general.

"The president did the right thing by visiting the troops yesterday, but this visit won't change the fact that those brave men and women should never have been fighting in Iraq in the first place," said Courtney O'Donnell, a spokesman for Democratic front-runner Howard Dean.

Sen. John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat whose campaign recently has faltered, said: "The president's trip to Baghdad was the right thing to do for our country. ... But, when Thanksgiving is over, I hope the president will take the time to correct his failed policy in Iraq that has placed our soldiers in a shooting gallery."

How About the Troops?

How About the Troops?

Bill Clinton never let us forget that it was all about him. Never has a president talked so openly about his legacy, about what he hoped historians would write about him. No president has ever tried to write his own history so much.

In many ways, Bill Clinton lived the cynicism that most reporter feel in Washington. And so, we should not be surprised by today's Washington Post lead editorial.

"AS POLITICAL theater goes, it was classic."

"...it was so beautifully timed, both to interrupt a Thanksgiving Day news lull and to kick off this winter's presidential campaign..."

"..many will dismiss it as nothing more than a clever television stunt, conceived and carried out by the president's media advisers. They may well be right."

"By appearing in person in Baghdad, President Bush has identified himself more deeply and personally with a costly military campaign from which he might have tried to keep his distance."

The Washington Post imagines that this was just a publicity stunt and not a sincere attempt to show respect for and extend thanks to our soldiers overseas. Judging by their reaction, our soldiers don't share the Post's cynicism.

Are Suicide Bombers A Threat To Peace?

Are Suicide Bombers A Threat To Peace?

I wish that Kofi Anan would criticize the Palestinians for their suicide bombings with as much vigor as he criticizes Israelis for building a fence to keep them out.
Anan released an 11 page letter detailing all the inconveniences that the fence would impose upon Palestinians. Has the UN prepared such a letter criticizing Yasir Arafat for using his people's children as bombs against Israeli children?

What a Difference!

What a Difference!

Can anybody imagine Bill Clinton caring enough for the troops under his command to risk his flabby, lilly-white ass in this way?

Just days removed from the near-shootdown of a DHL cargo plane, our president secretly flew to Baghdad to serve Thanksgiving dinner to our soldiers there.

The leftist media is absolutely gagging on it.

"While the troops cheered the moment, it is too soon to know whether the image of Bush in his Army jacket yesterday will become a symbol of strong leadership or a symbol of unwarranted bravado."

Of course, to the liberal cynics, this was all a publicity stunt. Bush couldn't possibly actually care for the troops.

Assassination, Coup d'etat, Invasion? Why Not?

In the course of running his own nation into the ground, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has chosen a course that could be devastating to our own. Already he has provided documents to Muslim radicals. Now he has turned his country's passport agency over to a Baathist.

Getting rid of this guy would be very popular among Venezuelans and we wouldn't have to rebuild the country afterwards.

Push a Button, Have an Orgasm

Push a Button, Have an Orgasm

In his movie "Sleeper," Woody Allen encountered a machine called the "orgasmatron." Go inside, close the door, and it gives you orgasms. It made for a good laugh, but now a group of scientists has invented an orgasmatron and they're advertising for women volunteers who would like to give it a test drive.

Only one woman has tried it so far and she resports that the results were, "breathtaking!"
“She even told me she had the first multiple orgasm of her life using the device,” said Meloy, one of the machine's inventors.

I'm no fan of Michael Jackson, but he strikes me as a pathetic figure, worthy of pity rather than a sexual predator type deserving only of loathing.

And after one family raked in $20 million bucks with a sexual molestation accusation, it was only a matter of time before it was tried again. I think that now, it has.

I wasn't there, but I really, truly doubt the story that the curren gold diggers are telling. And it now appears that there's good reason for doubt.

I've never liked Mark Geragos, going back to his defense of Clinton plaything Susan McDougall, but when he unloaded on all the Michael Jackson profiteers Tuesday, I was thinking, "right on!"

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend?

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend?

Before I read the British Broadcasting Corporation’s report on the ironically misnamed “anti-war movement” in Italy, a part of me wanted to believe that the left was simply naïve. Now I know better. I really couldn’t completely convince myself that those who wish us to leave Iraq immediately completely grasped the consequences such an abandonment would reap. Now, I believe they do. Further, I believe that they embrace those consequences.
Even as Italy is mourning 19 soldiers killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq, a group calling itself the “Antiimperialistas” was raising money for their killers.
Antiimperialista spokesman Moreno Pasquinelli said, “It’s not our affair how they use this money. If they want to use it to print papers for example, or to buy weapons in order to fight for the Iraqi independence," he said. "We support the armed struggle in Iraq. Our money is to help them, it doesn't matter to us if they use it to buy weapons, Kalashnikovs, or medicines for people."
I don’t think they’ll be spending Antiimperialista money on Band-Aids. The Iraqis get all the medicine they want from us. And I don’t think Mr. Pasquinelli really believes that Iraqis yearn for the good old days of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic despotism. He just wants to see his own country fail.
Surely the anti-war crowd in this country can foresee what the future holds should we quit Iraq. And I believe that is precisely the future of their fantasies. Just look at what happened when, on a much smaller and less consequential scale, Clinton fled from the Sudan after a single Blackhawk helicopter was shot down. What lessons did our enemies learn when Clinton called off a Marine landing in Haiti when they were confronted by machete-wielding drunks? The terrorists could not help but conclude that America lacked the will to stand up for itself.
Surely Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean do not seriously believe that the UN is capable of building a free, peaceful and stable Iraq. Considering how the UN fled from both Iraq and Afghanistan after taking a few casualties, does any serious-minded person really believe that these cowards can keep Iraq from falling back into the hands of the Baathists? Would the UN even care?
The people who are planting and detonating roadside bombs and shooting rocket-propelled grenades at our helicopters are not trying to achieve a free Iraq. They want to re-impose some sort of Islamo-fascism, - Saddam-style, Iranian-style, or Bin Laden-style. They are not trying to win self-determination for the Iraqi people. They want to dictate the Iraqi people’s future.
There is no middle ground. If Iraq is not transformed into a stable, prosperous and peaceful nation, then it will serve as an incubator for terrorism. The only course to peace is the path we are now on. Retreat is defeat.
It’s useful to remember who it is that is shooting at us over there. They are the professional rapists whose resumes are not of much use unless Saddam is set back on his throne as a conquering hero. They are the thugs who pulled the tongues out of people suspected of whispering against the prior regime. They are the sadistic goons who kept children in dungeons. They are the guys who once strutted the streets of Baghdad and fed on the terror their uniforms incited in the common people.
Retreat would put them back in charge and more powerful than ever, because if they drive us out, then they know that we’ll never again marshal the will to kick them out again.
Unquestionably those who are killing our soldiers are encouraged by the anti-war rhetoric in this country. They know that they cannot actually match us in force of arms, but they realistically believe that, with the cooperation of the Seattle Times, CBS, NBC, the BBC, the New York Times, and the Democratic Party, they can wilt our will.
I still do not believe that Saddam resurrected is the Left’s dream. But a weakened and humiliated America is. And they’re willing to sell the Iraqi people back to Saddam in exchange for an American defeat.
I have to give Italy’s Antiimperialistas credit for one virtue that our own Left lacks – honesty regarding their intentions.

Not Allowed the Dignity of Independent Thought

Not Allowed the Dignity of Independent Thought

You have to be the right kind of Democrat before you are issued a license to use Democrat endorsed slurs, just as you must be the right kind of minority before Democrats will permit you a place on the court. Georgia’s senior Democratic US Senator Zell Miller finds himself under attack for comparing his party’s treatment of judicial nominee Janice Rogers Brown to a lynching. President Bush nominated Brown to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Along with certain other nominees, Democrats have used the filibuster to prevent her nomination from coming to a vote.
"The Democrats in this chamber refuse to stand and let her do it,” Miller thundered, “They're standing in the doorway, and they've got a sign: Conservative African-American women need not apply. And if you have the temerity to do so your reputation will be shattered and your dignity will be shredded. Gal, you will be lynched."
"Either Senator Miller has conveniently forgotten a frightening period of American history, or he is willfully demeaning all those African-Americans who were hung from trees throughout the period of racial segregation in the South," complained Wade Henderson, the director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
Certainly such criticism can be justified. It was demeaning to Jews when the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals compared the chicken industry to the Nazi holocaust. But California Senator Barbara Boxer suffered no criticism for using the same metaphor. In 2001, she explained why she intended to vote against John Ashcroft’s nomination for Attorney General: "I hate to use a charged term, but it's my heart talking here. I really think it was a political lynching that happened in the United States Senate." Did Boxer demean “all those African-Americans hung from trees.” No, Barbara Boxer is the right kind of Democrat.
Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, who jumps through whatever hoops liberal pressure groups hold up for him, dutifully squeaked, "I was offended. I think it was unfortunate. I think those within the civil rights leadership who have commented and have asked for an apology are right."
Miller also recalled his party’s racist past by comparing the minority party’s obstruction to former Alabama governor George Wallace’s attempts to prevent integration of the University of Alabama.
I can and soon will recall a few similar slurs directed at Republicans by Democrats that no Democrat complained about.
Even though Bill Clinton’s nominee for the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division declared that he would not honor Supreme Court decisions that obstructed his agenda, Jesse Jackson declared that opposition to his nomination was “a hate crime.” Was this disrespectful of hate crime victims?
Typical Democrat slurs include:
Rep. John Lewis of Georgia evoking Nazis when he declared that Republicans were, “coming for our children. They're coming for the poor. They're coming for the sick, the elderly and the disabled."
Julian Bond, Chairman of the NAACP accused that "[the Republican Party's] idea of equal rights is the American flag and Confederate swastika flying side by side."
Since Democrats boast that they have graciously permitted 168 judicial nominees through the gates it is worth taking note of whose nominations they have obstructed. Three are women of which one is also African-American. Another is Hispanic. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, specified Miguel Estrada’s ethnicity (“He is Latino”) as a reason to oppose him. I doubt that their judicial temperament or ideology departs radically from white male nominees who have been permitted through the door. The difference is that views tolerable in white males are intolerable among traditional victim groups that serve as incubators for indignant leftwing agitators.
And I’m still waiting for the first liberal to criticize Ted Kennedy for calling Janice Brown a “Neanderthal.”
Even America’s preeminent racial demagogue is uncomfortable with the Democrats’ treatment of Judge Brown. "I don't agree with her politics. I don't agree with some of her background. But she should get an up-or-down vote" opined the oh-so-reverend Al Sharpton. He equated the filibusters with the "pocket vetoes" used for so long against blacks.
Wade Henderson was more subdued in his reaction to Sharpton than Zell Miller’s: "I don't believe it. That can't be true. It would be shockingly surprising."
The reverend Al had better be careful, or he might discover that he is the wrong kind of black.

I Guess It's Up To The Blogosphere, Again.

It's been about 5 days now since the Weekly Standard revealed a secret CIA memo documenting the links between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. And so far - nothing. A brief mention in the Washington Post, but nothing in the New York Times, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc.
When a fairly inconsequential memo from Donald Rumsfeld to a few subordinates suggesting that the war on terror could be fought more efficiently, they were all over it. Which is bigger news?
Jack Shafer has one obvious explanation. But clearly, the press has an anti-Bush political agenda and reporting this story would embarass Howard Dean and John Kerry, among many, many others.

I guess it's okay for a liberal to use racist slurs against minorities, if those minorities happen to be conservative.

Being liberal means never being held to a standard.

But, the environmentalist wackos should take some comfort. Their friends the French got os fed up with Greenpeace that they sank their ship. It's true! I think that even a green weanie or two was killed as well.

It seems so long ago now when California Attorney General Bill Lockyer warned outgoing governor Gray Davis not to descend into his typical gutter style politics for the recall. If he did, Lockyer threatened to vote in favor of the recall.
Well, now that the puke politics field is relatively unoccupied, Lockyer has decided to go for the low ground.
Lockyer has proposed setting up an 800 number which supposed victims of Arnold Schwarzenegger's groping can call to lodge complaint.
Very classy Bill. That's the sort of elevated politics the people are looking for.

A Most Uncivil Man Calls for Civility

Nicholas Kristoff, who for the last couple of years has been competing with Michael Moore and Al Franken for the angry left's affections has surrendered the ground and is now calling for civility (registration required) from his party.

Of course he blames Republicans for initiating the incivility. Anybody old enough and honest enough to recall Democrat rage at Reagan knows better. If this happened on Clinton's watch, we would be packing up so we could cut and run. In fact, judging by the rhetoric we hear from the Democrat leadership in this country, cut and run is the plank in their party platform, along with abortion on demand.

Italy took a big hit earlier today, losing 9 policeman and 3 soldiers to a bomb in Iraq. Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi (registration required) says that Italy will not tucking her tail between her legs and running.

What? American's Want to Hear Something Positive?

What? American's Want to Hear Something Positive?

It's probably a dead end strategy, given what it takes to attract the party's left wing, but it is nevertheless refreshing to read that one Democrat candidate believes that his party has to stand for something more than hating Bush.

"It is true that you can get Democratic activists on their feet cheering much more quickly bashing George Bush than any other way," Democrat presidential candidate Edwards said yesterday. "But remember, we're going through a process here and people are looking for a president. They're not looking for somebody who can just beat up George Bush. They're looking for someone who can inspire them and lead them."

Does he have anyting to offer? Well, he didn't articulate anything in the article quoted above.

It's Still All About the Clintons

It's Still All About the Clintons

Among the more striking features about the 2000 Democratic National Convention was that it was all about the Clintons. The party's nominee was Al Gore, but he convention was about celebrating the Clintons.

Before leaving the Whitehouse, Clinton intalled his personal sock puppet, Terry McAwful, as party chairman, and the Clintons still use the party to keep themselves front and center.

The latest offense is Hillary's intrusion into the Democrat primaries. No, she's not running. She's just doing all she can to push the real candidates off the front page.

Ted Kennedy Supports George W. Bush on WMD's

Once upon a time, Ted Kennedy opposed the war in Iraq because he believed that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction.

Teddy get two passes here. First of all, liberals are never held to account for what they said in the past. Nobody expects consistency any more than we expect marital fidelity or sobriety.

Secondly, there's that sobriety thing. Jim Beam takes a toll, which might explain why Ted Kennedy cast mistaken votes twice recently - supporting the war and banning partial birth abortion, until somebody filled him in and he changed his vote.

The Associated Press announced a stunning bit of news today! There have been no suicide bombings in Israel since at least August 7th. 1998! More than five years, and not one bombing.
The Associated Press compiled a list of Islamic terror attacks dating back to 1998, and amazingly, not one occurred in Israel! I guess all those exploding children stories were all just a bad dream. They sure seemed like a bad dream. No culture could be so depraved as to strap bombs on their own children and use them to blow up other children, could it?

And Democrats Think We Should Trust our Security to Internatioal Organizations?

And Democrats Think We Should Trust our Security to Internatioal Organizations?

Aside from some plutonium, a few centrfuges, a lazer enrichment device, and uranium hexafluoride, the International Atomic Energy Agency found "To date there is no evidence that (Iran's) previously undeclared nuclear material and activities referred to above were related to a nuclear weapons program."

Huh!

Why Isn't This Racism?

Why Isn't This Racism?

I have never heard of "Pakistani-Americans" taking sides in a political race. But, they have in Louisiana, endorsing Democrat Kathleen Blanco for governor. What's up? Well, might it have something to do with her Republican opponent, Bobby Jindal being of Indian ancestry?

Kerry Campaign Fires Its Candidate

Kerry Campaign Fires Its Candidate

The John Kerry presidential campaign has floundered and faltered since its early frontrunner days. To shake things up, John Kerry replaced the campaign manager. And sure enough, the campaign has been shaken up.

"After examining the campaign from top to bottom," Said new campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill, "we decided that the problem was the candidate. He's stiff, inarticulate and cannot focus his message. But, he has really great hair!"

The campaign is looking about now for a candidate with equally good hair-styling, but with a more endearing public persona to head the campaign.

Would the campaign have to change its name too?

"We're not sure about that," said Cahill, "we really do like Theresa Heinz's money."

Dean, The Candidate for Ending American Supremacy

George Soros, currency trader and destroyer of nations, has chosen his man - Howard Dean - as the best candidate to advance his cause of bursting "the bubble of American supremacy."

He believes that America represents the " the gravest threat to world freedom."

And now, he intends to put his ill-gotten billions behind the man he believes will advance his anti-American cause, Howard Dean.

Josh Marshall Proves Our Point

Josh Marshall Proves Our Point

In recent months, Democratic presidential candidates and other critics of the administration have accuse George W. Bush of lying about Iraq being an "imminent threat." But the truth is that nobody in the Bush Administration ever said that Iraq posed an imminent threat. In fact, in his State of the Union Address, Bush specifically said that the threat was not imminent, and that we could not afford to wait until the threat was imminent.
Nevertheless, the big lie continues. So, left-wing columnist Josh, who himself has repeated this lie, but could not find any actual instance of the administration citing an imminent threat asks his readers to find what he could not, an occasio of anyone, anywhere, at anytime citing Iraq as an imminent threat. His readers did not better than he did, but he does his best twist actual words into what he wishes were the case. It actually sort of funny in a shrill, pathetic sort of way.

The Problem with Arabs is Arabs

The Problem with Arabs is Arabs

Al-Mawari, a Yemenite journalist and columnist for the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat wrtoe a series of columns tracing the origins of Arab hatred of the United States. It would have been interesting simply because it skips right past cliche's and addresses the obvious that most people duck.

Of the Arab news media he note: "Day and night, they promote lies and misinformation, and they [themselves] are a primary reason for the flaring of this hatred towards America among the common folk."

Of the justificaitons for the US invading Iraq, ""Atwan wonders 'how the American government can justify a war against a besieged country [i.e. Iraq]… based on the lie regarding weapons of mass destruction.' My dear sir, Iraq had no need to hide weapons of mass destruction because Saddam Hussein's regime was the greatest weapon of mass destruction, and this weapon was destroyed. The mass graves are overwhelming proof that this regime was a regime of mass destruction. The Americans could not risk leaving Saddam in power just because he may not have possessed such weapons [of mass destruction], when he had already used them against his people and against Iran…"

On why Arabs cannot be permitted to acquire weapons of mass destruction: "…The danger inherent in WMD is the possibility that such weapons will be within the reach of reckless regimes and terror gangs… The U.S. possesses a huge WMD arsenal, but has not used them since World War II. In contrast, we, the Arabs, have threatened to destroy half the state of Israel, when we had at our disposal a very small quantity of this type of weapon and after we used it against our Arab brothers… What would happen if we had real WMD at our disposal? Considering the hatred boiling within us towards ourselves and towards the entire world, we might destroy the entire planet…"

Make it Hurt!

Make it Hurt!

Sometimes, people forget who you are.

"This is to remind the town that we have teeth and claws and we will use them," said Lt. Col. Steven Russell, commander of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment.

The Army rolled through Tikrit yesterday putting a serious hurt on trouble maker and terrorists in retaliation for the shooting down of an American helicopter.

Some people seem to have forgotten who the baddest man on the block is.

Well, At Least She Likes Kraft Cheese

Well, At Least She Likes Kraft Cheese

The wife of accused terrorist fund-raiser Sami Al-Hussayen has agreed to haul her America-hating rear end back to Saudi Arabia. Maha Omar Al-Hussayen had become a cause-celeb for northwest lefties who lamented her poor, helpless condition after her old man was jugged by the FBI. They raised money for her and parroted her claim that she was an innnocent victim of religious discrimination.
Then, a week ago, the FBI released transcripts of taped conversations in which she expressed her hatred for America.

In one call Maha said American flags "are all over, with people wearing T-shirts with the flag and people kissing these flags, but nothing more."

"As for me, I bought a sandal that has a flag, so the whole of America would be under my feet," Maha said in the phone call. "And may the bountiful God increase their terror."

But, she did say that, "I love Kraft cheese."

Bush Must Have Said All The Right Things

The Iranian mullahs told George Bush to mind his own business. He offended them by saying that he would promote freedom and democracy everywhere. Iran was joined by most of Arab countries in the region, which is hardly surprising considering that nothing threatens despots more that a yearning for freedom.

The Seattle Post-Intelligenser Should be Ashamed

The Seattle Post-Intelligenser Should be Ashamed

The P-I seems to have adopted a novel editorial policy. For truth to be permitted on its pages, tribute must be paid in the form of advertising. After asking the Seattle Post-Intelligenser to correct a clearly misleading representation of a speech he had given, congressman George Nethercutt purchased a full-page advertisement setting the record straight. On that page, readers were given an opportunity that the P-I’s editors would have preferred they did not have, the chance to compare the P-I’s selectively edited version of his speech with an actual transcript of the speech in context. It’s unlikely that many readers found the P-I’s version an accurate interpretation of Nethercutt’s intended message.

During a speech at the University of Washington, George Nethercutt was attempting to fill in vast tracts of untold truth regarding the successes that we are achieving in Iraq. He believed, correctly in my view, that the press was concentrating far too much of its attention on counting bodies rather than chronicling progress being made by our military in pacifying and rehabilitating Iraq.

The actual quote in context: “So the story is better than we might be led to believe – I'm – just – indicting the news people – but it's a bigger and better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day which, which, heaven forbid, is awful.”

The P-I’s version: "It's a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day."

The bright glare of sunlight did not sit well with the P-I’s editorial board. After depositing Nethercutt’s money, the P-I responded with a petulant editorial blasting back. "It's a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day," the would-be senator gaffed at a gathering Monday. The family of Pfc. Kerry Scott of Concrete, who buried their young hero Tuesday, likely would not share Nethercutt's news judgment,” opined the P-I.

That is a low blow, unworthy of a hick town gazette, let alone a paper of the P-I’s stature. Aside from the disgusting presumption of claiming to speak for the dead soldier’s parents, how dare the P-I justify its distortion by invoking the family’s grief?

Nethercutt was in fact, absolutely right. Can the history of the Civil War be summarized as 558,052 dead? Does a body count of 407,316 tell the whole story of America’s involvement in World War II? Did we lose 307 dead at the Battle of Midway in May of 1942, or did we turn the tide of the Pacific War? The Seattle P-I’s body counts will occupy little space when the Iraq War is written into history books.

In fact, the P-I inflicts far more upon pain the family of Pfc. Kerry Scott when it conveys the notion that he died for nothing. If the P-I’s concern for Kerry Scott extended beyond the paper’s cynical use of his corpse as a bludgeon to batter Nethercutt’s senatorial campaign, then they would comfort the family by telling the world what the young man gave his life for.

The conventional wisdom preaches that one does not pick fights with people who buy printer’s ink by the barrel. But in this case failing to do so is akin to paying tribute to Barbary pirates. The Seattle P-I has no more authority to choose the electoral victors by managing or making up news than the Los Angeles Times did in the California recall campaign. And while it may be to his ultimate political advantage to kiss the P-I’s ring, it’s not a good practice for those who place a high regard upon self-respect.

And this really is the sort of thuggery that should be confronted. Good for congressman Nethercutt! By purchasing that advertisement he was able to choose the field of battle and set the terms of engagement. And the P-I’s low road response exposes its vulnerability on the issue.

I suspect that George Nethercutt probably wasn’t the sort to meekly hand over his milk money to the schoolyard bully. His inclination to confront bullies contributed to his victory of the sitting Speaker of the House, Tom Foley, in 1994. And his run against the supposedly unbeatable US Senator Patty Murray in 2004 is another manifestation of his combativeness. And so, it’s entirely in character that he would come out fighting against the Seattle Post-Intelligenser’s smear campaign.

More Bad News For Democrats

More Bad News For Democrats

You know it's bad when Democrats are reduced to claiming that the loss of governorships is good for their party. Who can blame them, when the news gets as bad as this:

The Incredible Shrinking Penises

The Incredible Shrinking Penises

Mark Steyn makes fun of the rash of shrinking penises that has begun to sweep the Islamic world. But this isn't really funny. How hard is it for dictators and imams to convince such people that all their misery is the fault of Jews and the United States.

The Case for War

The Case for War

Sadly, too few Americans possess the attention span to remember why we went to war and this has permitted Democrats to lie about it. No, George Bush never did say that Saddam presented and "imminent threat" and his administration went to great lenghths to state the Saddam had no direct connection to 9/11. Nevertheless, he has been accused of stating both and accused of lying about it.
Christopher Hitchens reminds us of why we went to war and why we had to go to war. Sadly, I fear that too few Americans possess the attention span to read it all.

How Long Will We Remember 9/11?

How Long Will We Remember 9/11?

In a couple of years, England will celebrate the 400th anniversary of Guy Faulks Day. I wonder if anyone will remember 9/11 five year from now.

Terry McAuliffe Politcal Laboratory

Terry McAuliffe Politcal Laboratory

The Clinton/McAuliffe method seems not to work anymore. McAuliffe made Mississippi a testing ground for his personal attack style of politics and lost big, even though the Democrat was the incumbent. Whomever becomes the Democratic nominee for president is going to dump this jerk.

I'll miss him. He's been good for Republicans by giving us raw Democrat.

Bolina Votes for ... Dakar?

Bolina Votes for ... Dakar?

Somebody help me here. What does Dakar mean in this context? If you don't know about Bolinas, you can figure it all out by reading the text of the initiative that passed there last Tuesday:

"Shall the following language constitute a policy of the Bolinas Community Public Utility District? Vote for Bolinas to be a socially acknowledged nature-loving town because to like to drink the water out of the lakes to like to eat the blueberries to like the bears is not hatred to hotels and motor boats. Dakar. Temporary and way to save life, skunks and foxes (airplanes to go over the ocean) and to make it beautiful."

If you've never been to Bolinas, they don't want you there. It's on maps, but not on signs. Whenever the state or county puts up road signs showing the road to Bolinas, the residents come out at night with saws and cut them down. You will never see a sign with and arrow pointing to "Bolinas, 2 miles."

Incidentally, whatever Bolinas voted for, it passed by a 2-1 margin.

The Democrats Deal With Weighty Issues

The Democrats Deal With Weighty Issues

Nobody can take seriously any political party that can spend days worried about such trivial crap as this.

Another Great Day For The Democrats!

Another Great Day For The Democrats!

After the Terminator sent soon to be ex-governor Gray Davis into retirement, Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McCaullife announced that the result was great news for Democrats. It revealed and anti-incumbent fervor that would help Democrats toss George W. Bush out in 2004.
Well, Terry just got more good news yesterday. A Republican will be occupying the Kentucky governor's mansion for the first time in 32 years. And, former Republican National Committee chairman Haley Barbour soundly defeated the incumbent Democrat in the governor's race.
Although, I just checked the DNC's site and I did not notice McCaullife crowing the same tune anywhere.
Although, you can participate in a very tasteful "kicking ass" chat room. Maybe there's something about it in there.

Don't Taunt CBS

Don't Taunt CBS

I've always prefered wide receivers who, after scoring a touchdown, hand the ball to the referee and head back to their sidelines. Endzone dances accomplish nothing.
And so, it's with some dismay that I hear and read all the celebrations over CBS's decision to pull "The Reagans" from the sweeps lineup.
Here is one. There are many, many others.
Don't taunt your opponent. It will only make him more determined to resist in the future. Victory is the goal, not the dance.

The Next Gravy Train For Lawyers?

The Next Gravy Train For Lawyers?

Cigarettes are addictive and so lawyers sue cigarette makers. French Fries are addictive, so lawyers sue on behalf of fat people. Video games are addictive, so.....

Why Democrats Cannot Be Trusted With Power

Why Democrats Cannot Be Trusted With Power

You've got to read this from the Democratic Underground!

This scumbag thinks that we need more soldiers dying for their country, so that public opinion will turn against George W. Bush in the 2004 election.

Clinton Proves His Incapacity

Clinton Proves His Incapacity

More than anything I can think of, stupid ideas like this are why Clinton and Carter were hopeless failures as presidents.

"We should continue to fight terror, but we have to realize that the AIDS issue is also a security issue," Clinton told reporters after talks with Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik in Oslo. "It's a humanitarian issue, but it's a security issue," he said, warning AIDS fueled poverty and desperation.

There is a big reason why we should invest more energy and treasure into fighting terrorism. Terrrorism threatens civilization. The terrorists want to destroy western culture and Christianity. AIDS is something that each one of us can protect ourselves from individually.

If Only the Wildfires Had Occurred Earlier

If Only the Wildfires Had Occurred Earlier

Suddenly, Gray Davis is a statesman, and not a cynical, corrupt, calculating politician. E. J. Dionne laments that, "A Hero is on his Way Out."

Before the fires, he was a terrible governor, "Then came Southern California's wildfires, and suddenly Davis was everywhere. The buttoned-up guy was unbuttoned. He appeared in open-necked shirts, reached out to those who had lost everything, urged firefighters on and cooperated visibly with Schwarzenegger."

Dionne seems to believe that Davis only needed a crisis to prove himself a good governor he really was. Maybe he needed to forcibly removed from politics to stop acting like a politician.

Krugman's Sloppy Research

Krugman's Sloppy Research

Since the New York Times' Paul Krugman transformed himself from an economic commentator into political pundit, he has been notoriously inaccurate in his news research. He has done so again, lifting a discredited quotation from the Seattle Post-Intelligenser. He was so lazy that he didn't even trouble himself to learn the name of the misquoted Republican ( Some Americans may share the views of the Republican congressman who said that progress in Iraq was "a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day." (Support the troops!)." Paul, his name is George Nethercutt.
I hope Mr. Krugman collects economic data more accurately.
Anyway, Krugman cites "Stein's Law," which states, "Things that can't go on forever, don't."
He's referring to the 7.2% growth last quarter that has overturned his gloom and doom forecasts of the last couple of years.
Funny, why didn't he remember Stein's Law during the tech stock bubble of the late 1990's?

The Reverse McCain Effect

The Reverse McCain Effect

Whenever John McCain, or any other Republican feels neglected, all he has to do is criticize George W. Bush, or his party and he'll be the toast of the Sunday Morning talk shows.
Senator Zell Miller, D-Georgia, announced over the weekend that he was so dissatisfied with this party's leadership that he intended to vote for Bush in 2004.
The Wall Street Journal published an op-ed piece, Hannity and Colmes invited him on their show, and he was on the Don Imus show this morning.
There has been no mention of it in any newspaper I've seen. I can't find any mention on the CNN website. If one gets news from MSNBC, you probably heard nothing of it.
We'll see if he appears on Meet the Press or This Week.

Truth Rules!

Truth Rules!

Barbra Streisand can bitch and moan all she wants, but her husband's crappy hatchet job on the Reagans seems headed for the toilet. It appears that CBS's admittedly fictionalized hatchet job on Ronald Reagan is stillborn. Even Chris Matthews found the movie offensive, calling it a "late hit."
I'm not a big fan of censorship, but neither am I a fan of smears. The leftist producers of the movie clearly were clearly motivated by something other than truth, fairness and historical accuracy.

Can You Say, "Chirac?"

Can You Say, "Chirac?"

The Washington Post reported today that the CIA has seized a huge cache of intelligence files, including the names of several high ranking politicians from countries outside the Middle East.

"The records would stretch 91/2 miles if laid end to end, the officials said. They contain not only the names of nearly every Iraqi intelligence officer, but also the names of their paid foreign agents, written agent reports, evaluations of agent credentials, and documentary evidence of payments made to buy influence in the Arab world and elsewhere, the officials said.

The officials declined to name individuals who they believe received funds or to name the home countries of the alleged recipients. One official said the recipients held high-ranking positions and worked both in Arab countries and in other regions. A second official said the payments were the subjects of "active investigations" by U.S. government agencies.

The recipients of the Iraqi funds were described by U.S. officials not as formal intelligence agents, but as prominent personalities and political figures who accepted money from Iraq as they defended Hussein publicly or pressed his causes."

I wonder which prominent personalities and politicians they might identify? Shall we play pin the tail on the weasel?

Time To Show the World, This is not Bill Clinton's America

Time To Show the World, This is not Bill Clinton's America

Saddam Hussein has finally achieved his Somalia moment. This is the moment when, according to the thinking of the Usama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, we are suppose to tuck our tails between our legs and run home to mommy.

“It is damaging not only because of the tragic human toll, but also because it looks like a dramatic escalation in lethality and therefore begs obvious questions: Are all helicopters at risk now? Are we losing the initiative? Who is winning?” said Peter D. Feaver, a former National Security Council staff member who teaches political science at Duke University.
“If the attacks get interpreted as evidence that the Baathist holdouts are winning, then attacks like this can be as lethal for public support as they are for the soldiers involved,” he said.

I have to wonder how many Americans have died because of the example Bill Clinton set when he ran from Somalia after the Blackhawk attack. Usama bin Laden believed America was too cowardly and decadent to defend itself, and so 3000 died on September 11, 2001, dozens died on the USS Cole. Hundreds of African died in the embassy bombings. All because bin Laden thought Bill Clinton's feebleness represented America. No doubt, many Americans have died in Saddam's resistance because he believes the same thing.

Zell Miller Endorses George W. Bush

Zell Miller Endorses George W. Bush

Senator Zell Miller (D-Georgia) has announced that he will vote for George W. Bush for president. This will be the first time he has ever voted for a Republican. He's doing so, not just because he admires Bush, but because he sees the peril of the Democrats running for the office.
They're wrong! Not just on Iraq, but on domestic policy (They don't want us to stay the course in this fight between tyranny and freedom. This is our best chance to change the course of history in the Middle East. So I cannot vote for a candidate who wants us to cut and run with our shirttails at half-mast.).

Iraq is No Vietnam

Iraq is No Vietnam

I wish that the Bush Administration would say what Thomas Friedman said last Thursday (I just returned from a professional trip and so the post is late).

He nails it with smart weapon precision when he says, "The people who mounted the attacks on the Red Cross are not the Iraqi Vietcong. They are the Iraqi Khmer Rouge — a murderous band of Saddam loyalists and Al Qaeda nihilists, who are not killing us so Iraqis can rule themselves. They are killing us so they can rule Iraqis."

I disagree with one paragraph though: "Let's get real. What the people who blew up the Red Cross and the Iraqi police fear is not that we're going to permanently occupy Iraq. They fear that we're going to permanently change Iraq. The great irony is that the Baathists and Arab dictators are opposing the U.S. in Iraq because — unlike many leftists — they understand exactly what this war is about. They understand that U.S. power is not being used in Iraq for oil, or imperialism, or to shore up a corrupt status quo, as it was in Vietnam and elsewhere in the Arab world during the cold war. They understand that this is the most radical-liberal revolutionary war the U.S. has ever launched — a war of choice to install some democracy in the heart of the Arab-Muslim world."

I think that many American leftists know very well that his is not about imperialism or oil. Even if they don't share the Baathist's philosophy, they are allied with them in their reflexive anti-Americanism.
